forbcenturies, Ceuta was ruled by various Berber n Arab dynasties. in 1415, King John I of Portugal launched a surprise naval assault n captured the city fr the Islamic Marinid Sultanate. victory marked very beginning of the Portuguese Empire. Portugal valued the port due to its strategic position at the entrance of the Mediterranean n its bustling trade networks.

2. The Union of Spain and Portugal (1580–1640)
In 1580, Portuguese royal bloodline died out, triggering a succession crisis. King Philip II of Spain claimed the Portuguese throne, uniting Spain n Portugal under a single monarch in what historians call the Iberian Union.
•during these 60 yre, Spanish citizens, soldiers, n traders heavily settled in Ceuta.
•city's economy military defense became deeply intertwined w/ Spain.

3. Choice to Stay Spanish (1640)
in 1640, Portugal rebelled against Spanish rule to reclaim its independence, sparking Portuguese Restoration War.

however, in 1640, when Portuguese Restoration of Independence took place, Ceuta did not accept Duke of Braganza, Dom João II, as its king, n became Spanish.

b/c local population had become overwhelmingly Spanish in culture n allegiance, Ceuta was the only city in the Portuguese Empire that chose to switch its loyalty to Spain instead of returning to Portugal.

4. The Treaty of Lisbon (1668)
war btwn Spain n Portugal dragged on for nearly 3 decades. when two nations finally signed Treaty of Lisbon in 1668, Spain officially recognized Portugal’s independence. in kind, Portugal formally ceded sovereignty of Ceuta to the Spanish Crown.

5. Why Spain Kept It After 1956 when Morocco gained independence fr French n Spanish colonial protectorates in 1956, Spain returned all of its newly acquired territories in northern Africa but refused to hand over Ceuta (and its sister city, Melilla).

Spain's stance remains that Ceuta has been an integral part of the Spanish state since 1668 - centuries before modern nation of Morocco even existed. b/c of this historical timeline, Spain treats Ceuta identically to any mainland city like Madrid or Seville.

A Lasting Portuguese Influence
Despite being fiercely Spanish - today, Ceuta still honors its Portuguese roots. modern flag of Ceuta uses the exact black-n-white background pattern of flag of Lisbon, n features Portuguese royal coat of arms right in the center.

unlike Ceuta, which was acquired through a peaceful political treaty w/ Portugal, Melilla (sister city) was directly annexed by a Spanish military expedition at end of 15th c.

1. Ancient Origins (Phoenician to Islamic Rule)
long before Spanish arrival, site was founded by the Phoenicians around the 7th c as a trading port called Rusadir which eventually fell to Roman Empire, the Byzantines, n later various Islamic dynasties. by 15th c, disputes btwn regional North African rulers left city’s fortresses in a state of ruin and decay.

2. The Spanish Conquest (1497)
in 1492, Spain completed Reconquista by capturing Granada, ending centuries of Muslim rule on Iberian Peninsula. Looking to secure Mediterranean trade routes against Barbary pirates, the Catholic Monarchs authorized an expansion into North Africa.
•On September 17, 1497, a fleet sent by the Duke of Medina Sidonia and led by commander Pedro de Estopiñán arrived at Melilla.
•“They arrived on September 17, 1497. The amazing thing is that they conquered the city almost without a fight!”

Because the city was largely ruined and poorly defended, the Spanish troops occupied it w/in a day.
•A subsequent Moroccan cavalry attempt to reclaim the port was repelled by cannon fire from Spanish ships offshore. 1/n

The best procedure is rapid and thorough reading of the material. The extensive reading rate should be as fast as the thinking process permits.

Scanning: for (a) the main idea, (b) specific information and (c) a preview of the material. To read effectively the reader must first review the material and the specific purpose for the reading.

9) The SQAR3 Reading Strategy:

"Scan: Quickly scan the introductory paragraph, subtitles, key sentences, key words, summary. Decide on the author's plan.

Question: Turn the title or key sentences into questions.

Anticipate: Before reading, try to answer these questions mentally.

Read: Read the entire selection and look for the author's ideas to answer your questions.

Recite: Close the book or magazine. Tell yourself in your own words what you have learned. Write notes on material that must be remembered.

Review: Later, to make your knowledge stick, review the gist of the article or chapter, again in your own words."

10) How to read with purpose:

-"Have definite questions which you wish answered through reading a given selection.

When I saw the video of this woman in this video (quoted post), I was forced to ask a question that has been running through my mind: What do these terrorists want?

Is it Power? Attention? Resources?

In fact, some have even said, they want to Islamize Nigeria. This can’t be true.

The inner workings of the spearheads as you can see below shows it’s not Islam. If you look at the actual history of this insurgency, their primary victims have always been the local Muslim populations.

They have bombed mosques during Friday prayers, wiped out entire communities in the northeast, and executed countless Muslim scholars who openly spoke out against their deviance.

When Mamman Nur bluntly stated that their actions were no longer Islam, he was pointing to the reality we already know.

We have a group that claims a religious mandate while systematically terrorizing, displacing, and murdering the very people they claim to represent. Their real focus has always been everything but propagation of faith.

The government must take decisive action to rescue victims and tackle the underlying issues around recruitment, logistics, networks, and the socioeconomic vulnerabilities that these groups exploit to survive. Deeply unfortunate 💔
