🐨 There are a lot of times when Jimin and I have diametric views and I thought this song absolutely had to be included, because this was the only song that I thought had the sound that could properly show the kind of choreography and intense performance that we've done that people liked so much. But for Jimin and our vocalists, it was difficult for them because, if you listen to 2.0, there is only one melody for them. "You know how we do do do do do." But to give life to that line is really difficult. The note is really high and the flavor of the language is very difficult. You have to have an understanding of Black music or you have to be from that world to digest/embody that melody. It was written by Charles. And it was difficult for us guys from Korea to digest it and this was the hardest to do in the whole album for our vocalist members, 2.0. And so some of them felt awkward or weren't satisfied with the way they sang it.
🐨 There was a lot of discussions about taking it out right up until the setlist was decided. I think Taehyung felt that way too. I and someone else--who was it?--we said no way. No way. In the end, it worked out this way. It's a relief that what I said turned out to be the case and the members now really like it a lot.

🐨 To be honest, we ended up making this album without having a fixed direction beforehand. Because of that, when the album came out, I completely expected opinions to be divided… starting with the title track itself. Whether people feel it’s lacking, whether the reactions are mixed, or whether some people simply don’t like it.

The important thing is that we came back together here, released a studio album like we promised, and are once again doing performances and going on tour. And the fact that not one person leaving the group, no one got hurt, and no one had to take a break — that we’re able to continue everything safely together — means so much 😭💜

i personally feel namjoon doesn't get enough credit for his pen game. in an industry flooded with ghostwriters, where lyricism itself is dead, joon keeps proving why he's one of the greatest songwriters out there. he's a musical genius.

🐨: Normal is a very sad song. I wrote the lyrics in Korean and then changed it to English for radio and stuff, but yeah, there is a Korean version of Normal. The guys have even recorded the Korean version. Idk if it will ever be out tho. Anyways, kerosene is oil that lights the bulbs. One day you love me, one day you say you hate me fine make me bulletproof, so that I won't die even if you shoot me. There was this keyword of Normal. But what is normal for us? As we live as BTS what is the normal for me? Someday ppl tell me that they love me and the other day they tell me to get lost just like a very toxic couple. Ppl put us high 1000 times and pull down 1000 times too.
"Two sides of a coin and they both ain't true"
Both sides aren't true. Why? Coz both sides are true and both sides are fake at the same time. There's no one who can explain this team called BTS.
"Wish I had a min just to turn me off"
Fine this is the life that I've chosen and all mistakes are mine but I can think about having a min of shutting off from the ppl. This doesn't mean that I wanna give up on my life but I can hope for ppl to forget me for a moment. I think that's the feeling behind writing this lyrics. Now that I see this song is really sad too.

We're accepting that we've chosen this fame. When we sing this song on stage we sing it as a happy song coz we're singing it together, coz this is the other side of the coin.

RM shared that “they don’t know ’bout us” was inspired by conversations with Jimin about emotions, perspective, and how people perceive them!

🐨: “Um, ‘they don’t know ’bout us’ is a song that Jimin really checked up on and worked on a lot.

Jimin always said that through this session, he really improved a lot. Not just in singing, but also in learning vocals and writing melodies too.

Before making this song, me, Jimin, and the songwriters there had worked on another song called ‘Weak.’

While talking about what kind of story we should tell, I brought up the phrase, ‘You make me weak.’ That was what I had in mind. But actually, it was something directed toward you guys.

‘You make me weak.’ It’s something you’d say to someone you love. ‘You always make me weak.’ But that feeling can be both bad and good, kind of like normal emotions.

Then Jimin asked me, ‘Hyung, why is it “You make me weak”?’ Why does it make you weak?

And I said, because people… they actually don’t know us. They can’t know us. Even I don’t fully know myself.

While talking about that, I think Jimin found that idea really interesting.

The idea that:
‘People make me weak because they don’t really know me.’

The next day, Jimin and I ended up splitting into different rooms, and I think there, with DOC and some sampling they brought in, they turned it into ‘they don’t know ’bout us.’

If you watch the performance, there are all those eyes and faces appearing on the iPad or tablet screens.

So originally, this song actually started as something written for ARMYs, but in the end, it became a really aggressive song directed at people outside who don’t really know us at all.”
