They call it independence. They raise the flag, blow trumpets, and read empty speeches. But ask the civil servant who has not seen his salary for months: what is freedom when your own labor is stolen from you?

Even when salaries are paid, they are nothing but crumbs. The so-called “minimum wage” of ₦70,000 cannot buy a bag of rice. By the time a worker pays transport, school fees, and rent, his pocket is emptier than before payday. Salaries vanish like smoke in a burning hut.

This is not just hardship — it is deliberate economic suffocation. A man who cannot survive on his wage is a man pushed towards crime, fraud, and immorality. The system is designed to break dignity, to force honesty to bend, to turn clean hands into dirty hands. When you cannot feed your children with truth, the devil of corruption will whisper in your ear. And that is exactly what the rulers want.

- Hungry workers are easier to manipulate.
- Desperate youths are easier to recruit as thugs.
- Broke citizens are easier to silence.

So they starve you, then they mock you with parades and ribbons. They teach you that to survive, you must steal, cheat, or betray. And then they call you the criminal, while they dine on stolen billions.

Today, flags will be waved, speeches read, anthems sung. They will tell us Nigeria is “65 years free.” But free from what? From the white colonialist, yes. But not from poverty. Not from hunger. Not from bloodshed.

Look at Kano — the so-called “Center of Commerce.” In places like Kurna, Daba gangs tear communities apart with machetes and guns. Mothers hide their sons, fathers guard their doors. Every night is war. This is the fruit of “freedom” after six decades.

- Independence should have meant schools, not street gangs.
- Independence should have meant jobs, not jailhouses.
- Independence should have meant safety, not fear.

But what do we see? The same leaders who inherited Nigeria from the colonialists now colonize their own people with corruption, neglect, and failed governance. They are worse than the white man who left, because at least he did not speak our language while robbing us.

An excerpt of my article appears below:

To be sure, we do have a challenge with insecurity in Nigeria, occasioned by banditry and farmer/herder clashes in the Northwest and Middle Belt of Nigeria, and an Islamic insurgency in the Northeast, which has largely petered out and is in its last leg.

However, more Muslims have been killed by these criminals than Christians, and the tragedy is that here in Nigeria, our media (and I have been previously guilty of this) tend to say nothing when bandits, herders and terrorists kill Muslims, but scream at the top of our voices when Christians are attacked.

This is because Christians dominate in the media in Nigeria.

According to the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data, ACLED, in the last decade, Nigeria has witnessed the most deaths from insecurity in the Northwest of the country, which is the heartland of Islam in Nigeria and the seat of the Sokoto Caliphate, which is the headquarters for Islam leadership in the country.

According to the ACLED, between 2010 and 2023, 13,485 people have died in these attacks, with the vast majority being Muslims. Bad enough. But nowhere near 500,000, or 100,000.

I am an Orthodox Christian, a vociferous one. In the pursuits of the Christian cause, I have spoken at the U.S. Congress and met with Congressman Christopher Smith, then the Chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, Human Rights and International Organisations, where I provided details about the then perilous state of Christianity in Nigeria under General Buhari.

But two things.

First, under General Buhari's leadership, things were bad for the Body of Christ, and we reached our lowest ebb ever in Nigeria's post-colonial history. However, things were nowhere near as bad as Radio Genoa and Bill Maher allege.

Secondly, there was never a genocide in Nigeria. Not against Christians, which would not even be a genocide; it would be regicide. And not against any ethnicity, with the exception of the Southern Kaduna Genocide, of which one man, Nasir El-Rufai, a bloodthirsty fellow who once threatened to kill foreign election observers, and the then Governor, should be held accountable. But it was a local, rather than a national issue.

And even in that instance, it was not exactly a religious issue. It was a case of farmer/herder clashes, of which the farmers were mostly Christians, while the herders were mostly Muslims or animists.

In fact, under the murderous El-Rufai, who admitted to paying these herdsmen, more Muslims (Shiites) were killed by the state than Christians.

It used to be that most terrorism related deaths of Christians in Nigeria were perpetrated against Christians by the terror group Boko Haram, and the Islamic State – West Africa Province, ISWAP.

The intent was to ignite religious war. But when, under the direction of the Christian Association of Nigeria, of which I was a go-between between the Presidency and the then President, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, Christians refused to retaliate, having been forewarned of the agenda of these groups, their agenda shifted. They began focusing on killing Muslims to ignite sectarian war amongst the Muslim Ummah, which failed, too.

Not only did those attempts fail to spark religious war, but the Nigerian Government arrested, prosecuted, convicted and imprisoned the man responsible for the most dastardly crimes against Christians, an individual by the name of Kabiru Sokoto, who was the brain behind the St. Theresa Catholic church Christmas Day bombing on 25 December 2011 in Madalla, Niger State, which killed 37 Christians.

He is still serving a life sentence in prison.

Those behind the June 5, 2022, St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church attack in Owo, Ondo State, have similarly been apprehended and are now being prosecuted.
