Mulago has started performing the first Cardiac MRI services in Uganda. The state of the Art Cardiac MRI scan will support Mulago together with the Heart Institute. This will save Ugandans on costs incurred abroad while accessing cardiac testing  services.

Happening Now | Parliament’s Health Committee Visit 🇺🇬

The Parliamentary Health Committee is conducting a fact-finding visit @MulagoReferral , led by Chairperson Dr. Monday Julius Rude, MP Bukonzo East, and accompanied by Mulago Executive Director, Dr. Rosemary Byanyima.

The Committee has so far toured the ICU, Neuro Ward, Laboratory and Endoscopy Unit, with Radiology, A & E and Acute care Unit.

Key challenges highlighted include staffing gaps, limited bed capacity and the growing burden of road traffic injuries, which continues to affect timely access to care.

The Committee has pledged to advocate for additional resources to support staff recruitment and equipment, strengthening Mulago’s capacity to provide free, quality healthcare to patients.

Strengthening healthcare partnerships. 🇯🇵🤝🇺🇬

Earlier today, @MulagoReferral hosted representatives from the Embassy of Japan in Uganda for an inspection visit aimed at strengthening collaboration & exploring opportunities for future support.

Mr. Masanobu Yonemitsu, First Secretary, accompanied by the Medical Attaché Dr. Tatsuya Matsuda, toured the Dialysis Unit, ICU, Microbiology Laboratories, Neurology Endoscopy, Radiology and Uganda Heart Institute, gaining first-hand insight into our operations, capacity and equipment supporting patient care.

The delegation also appreciated equipment received through past partnerships, including support from JICA, still in good working condition & continues to support healthcare delivery.

The visit highlighted the importance of sustained partnerships in strengthening specialised healthcare services.

Parliament’s Health Committee today paid an oversight visit to @MulagoReferral

Led by Dr. Monday Julius Rude (Chairperson & MP Bukonzo East), the team assessed service delivery across key units & specialised departments.

They commended @MulagoReferral for providing both basic & specialised care (saving patients from costly treatment abroad) & for maintaining a clean, patient-friendly environment.

Key issues flagged: overcrowding, limited human resources, and rising operational costs.

The Committee & Mulago agreed to improve public awareness on free vs. paid services.

Dr. Rosemary Byanyima the ED @MulagoReferral called for increased government funding for staff recruitment, training, modern equipment, utilities & research.

MPs toured Medical Outpatient, Endocrinology, Neurology, Organ Transplant, Dialysis & Paediatric Oncology units, interacted with staff and patients, and pledged to advocate for more resources in the next session.

We have concluded the Neurosurgical Camp @MulagoReferral .

80 life-changing neurosurgical procedures performed — including cranioplasties & tumour resections.

Patients with brain tumours, head injuries, hydrocephalus, vascular abnormalities & other complex conditions received the specialised care they needed.

The camp also strengthened the Mulago team with 5 additional neurosurgeons through the Neurosurgical Society of Uganda.

For some, the wait began in 2024. Today, they have a renewed chance at recovery.

Thank you to the dedicated Mulago neurosurgical team and everyone who made this possible.

Neurosurgical Camp @MulagoReferral

6 days into the 2-week neurosurgical camp @MulagoReferral , 41 patients have already received life-changing surgery completely free of charge.

The camp is prioritising elective cases that have faced long delays in accessing theatre. A multidisciplinary team of 9 neurosurgeons is treating both adults & children with brain tumours, spinal disorders, trauma-related injuries, and hydrocephalus.

Using advanced equipment, including a surgical microscope, the team operates with high magnification and precision on delicate structures of the brain, spine, and nerves.

Target by 21 August: 100 patients.
Improving mobility, cognitive function, reducing pain, and transforming quality of life — while helping families avoid the high cost of private care.
41 treated. 100 targeted. Lives being transformed.

Two South Sudanese specialists have already been trained and continue to contribute to the management of patients.

The engagement also highlighted challenges including language barriers, limited accommodation for patients.

The visit reaffirmed the importance of Uganda–South Sudan collaboration in expanding access to specialised care and building stronger healthcare systems across borders.

Strengthening cross-border collaboration in paediatric cancer care 🤝🏾

@MulagoReferral today hosted the South Sudanese Ambassador to Uganda H.E. Mr. Paul Molong Akaro together with a team from the Muslim World League.

The team visited the Paediatric Oncology Outpatient & Inpatient Units, where over 90 children for the past 5 years from South Sudan have received specialised care at the Units.

Discussions focused on:

Did you know @MulagoReferral is home to Uganda's only dedicated Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), the facility is providing round-the-clock critical care for children from across the country, handling patients with severe medical issues that cannot be treated on the general wards.

The Unit cares for children recovering from complex surgery, as well as those with life-threatening conditions including prolonged convulsions, severe infections, traumatic brain injuries, kidney and liver failure, and trauma-related injuries.

🏥 Did you know @MulagoReferral Paediatric Surgery Unit, located on Block B, Level 5, provides specialised surgical care for newborns, children and adolescents?

Managing both emergency & elective cases who need critical care within the next 24-48 hours.

On average, the Unit admits an average of 5–6 patients daily and serves as a national referral centre, receiving complex cases from across the country, including referrals from @KawempeNRH & @MulagoSWNH for specialised paediatric surgical management.

Bringing together a multidisciplinary team of Paediatric surgeons, orthopaedics, cardiologists, anaesthiologists and nephrologists to perform some of Uganda's most complex paediatric surgeries—including conjoined twin separations.

Since 2012, the team has successfully undertaken 12–15 conjoined twin separation procedures.
