I placed a bet on myself and tried out futures trading for over the last two and a half years.  It was one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my life, but it has taken an emotional toll on me.  Trading teaches you to master yourself; auditing internal signals, governing energy and emotion, systems and will power, and the most important part of it all – stillness and perspective.

There are no direct reports, there are no customers, there aren’t any talking heads to sway your conviction.  You learn extremely quick decision making in the futures market, because if you are not quick you will get bagged into a losing position.  There are absolutely no excuses for your actions, and it is complete radical accountability.

I made a lot of money; I lost money.  I have seen winning trades go from 0 to $100k in the matter of minutes and then go back all the way to 0.  I’ve seen money whipsaw so fast that if you don’t have emotional control, it would leave you curled up next to a toilet wanting to vomit.  Why is this important?  RISK MANAGEMENT.  Yes, trading teaches you risk management to the highest degree.  There is no passive income.  It’s your money on the line and it’s up to you to protect your capital.

There’s an aspect to trading that teaches you self-awareness and self-control.  When you see your capital moving in different directions it teaches you discipline and intention to what your outcomes are in the market.  There’s the aspect of fear/greed that puts you in an emotional state that you MUST be diligent in.  How about the ego?  It whips your ego in the rear end.  If you come into the futures market with a big ego, get ready for big losses.

In trading you become the ultimate money manager.  You don’t know what the market is going to bring to you each day.

I am now looking forward to my next chapter and moving back into the corporate world in either manufacturing, costing, or supply chain.

I am looking for a new role that really challenges my experience to deliver new processes and strategies that channel creativity, engineering, and financial skills.
