Newsreader @TimesRadio/@talkSPORT/@VirginRadioUK & commentator for @WTA, @skysportstennis, @OfficialPDC. Dual 🇬🇧/🇮🇪 and proud owner of a Pointless trophy.
@JRCooper26@apopey *Forest were scheduled to be our second opponents in 91/92 . The opening-day fixture at Palace was postponed because the summer ‘improvement’ works at Selhurst Park weren’t completed in time.
@Sanny_Rudra@wearetrackradio That particular choice of song might be a tad insensitive; Neil Diamond's writing of Sweet Caroline was inspired by a photo of JFK's daughter and tonight's match is being played in the city where Kennedy was assassinated (five days before Caroline Bouvier Kennedy's 6th birthday).
@PeterSimmoYNWA Claudio Caniggia. Pole-axed three times in the opening defeat by Cameroon, scored the decisive goal against Brazil in the last 16, and also Argentina's goal in the semi-final in the San Paolo.
It’s 40 years to the day since England beat Poland 3-0 at the World Cup.
But when the game was goalless, they received a wonderful dressing down from Barry Davies…
@BBCMOTD Despite the effort that goes into compiling these you just know that most pundits and co-comms will completely butcher the pronunciation anyway. Will any commentator be brave enough to say Bruno Fer-nange?
Dixon made his last competitive appearance for 🏴 in the infamous 7-1 win against San Marino in 1993 (was recalled for a friendly in '99)...almost 33 years ago. He never played at a major finals. It'd be the equivalent of ITV employing John Atyeo as a co-comm at Italia 90.
Imagine having the privilege of working at the World Cup as a co commentator and moaning about the time he has to get up to travel to next venue. Lee Dixon just did that.
Previous @FIFAWorldCup openers at the Azteca:
1970: Mexico 0-0 USSR
1986: Italy 1-1 Bulgaria
Mexico 🇲🇽 and South Africa 🇿🇦 also drew in the 2010 opener in Johannesburg.
Draw tonight: 7/2
@MrTomClayton Great video and it makes me miss Ilkley. Not convinced about the darker navy trim. Maybe it’s a nod to the Kaizer Chiefs’ home shirt and hence that’s why Radebe is in the video…?
@adamsummerton Very true. Even the great Brazilian Falcao was a fairly unknown quantity in 82 but he played for Roma at the time (the majority of the Brazilians played their club football in Brazil).
