Fidesz Orbán Viktor beszéde https://t.co/gF9b1O9MJ2 - Amazing pictures of Fidesz chiefs in their moment of historic defeat. I witnessed the fall of the MSZMP regime in 1989, and this really takes me back. #Hungary

The dismantling of state capture is already beginning today.
In his victory speech, Péter Magyar called for the resignation of
– Tamás Sulyok, President of Hungary
– the President of the Constitutional Court
– the President of Hungary’s Supreme Court (the Curia)
– the Prosecutor General
– the President of the State Audit Office
– the President of the National Competition Authority
and other captured state institutions.
Magyar reiterated that joining the European Public Prosecutor's Office and restoring Hungary as a constructive partner in Europe will remain top priorities for his government.
In response, Hungarian citizens gathered at Batthyány tér, across the Danube from Parliament, chanting: “Europe, Europe, Europe.”
What becomes of the Budapest hub of nationalist thinkers & institutions after Orbán’s downfall? Does it stay put and seek to incubate a Fidesz comeback? Decamp to Bratislava / Belgrade / Prague / Washington? Disperse across Europe ahead of the major election years of 2027 & 2029?

Viktor Orbán's defeat is not only important for Hungary and the EU, but also for Bosnia-Herzegovina. Orbán's malign influence, the support of Milorad Dodik's secessionism, and the demonizing of Bosniaks have been undermining the sovereignty of this country in the last years.
I think people outside Hungary may not understand just how far state institutions, media including private media, universities, the legal system, big business and the police have been made arms of Orban's political party. This is going to be a long haul

In less than a week in Dec 1989, Ceaușescu's seemingly unshakable communist dictatorship collapsed in Romania. Article via Transtelex, an independent HU-lang news outlet in Transylvania. Explores how revolt sparked in Timișoara spread to Bucharest. https://t.co/zgxnHFeoJB
#Timisoara#Romania 17 December 1989 The communist authorities made 800 arrests in 24 hours. People regrouped in different parts of the city. Down with Communism and Down with Ceausescu were shouted. People entered the local headquarters of the Communist Party and threw portraits
As an undergrad at Leeds in the 80s, I could find only these and a few others: Fejto (1971) Harman (1983), and Irving (1981). Neil Ascheron’s book The Polish August (1981) gripped me too.
