Türkiye and Somalia meet on the dial of a single watch. Yolcu, meaning “The Voyager,” is made by Gurlevik, a watch brand founded in Istanbul by two young Turkish craftsmen.

Its dial carries nautical charts, a ship, and the spirit of navigating by the stars. The ship reminds me of the Beden, the ancient sailing vessel of the Somali coast. Built in Hafun without a single nail, its planks sewn with coconut fibre, the Beden carried Somali fishermen and traders across the Indian Ocean for two thousand years.

The brand’s claim is what won me over: “We didn’t design it to chase trends, but to start conversations. We wanted an honest, lasting watch, one worth passing on to the next generation.”

A watch built to be passed down, and a ship that sailed for two millennia. Turkish craftsmanship, the maritime soul of the Somali coast, one dial. That was enough for me.
