Enough is enough. Today I raised the case of Joshua Wong, prosecuted in Hong Kong under the draconian National Security Law simply for demanding the freedoms we take for granted in this country.
China has trashed the Sino-British Joint Declaration and dismantled Hong Kong’s freedoms.
I welcome the @Ed_Miliband@FCDOGovUK Foreign Secretary’s commitment to take up Joshua Wong’s case with the Chinese government. Britain must continue to speak out for those being persecuted for peacefully defending freedom and democracy.
Chan Yin-lam, swimmer & protester in 2019, was a 15-year-old girl who drowned herself in the sea, naked. The public believed she was murdered, raped, and her body dumped into the sea, and were dissatisfied as police refused to disclose all CCTV & autopsy report. May justice come!
Jimmy Lai has now spent more than 2,080 days in a Hong Kong prison cell, most of it in near total solitary confinement. He is 78 years old and lives with diabetes. Next week, when Xi Jinping arrives in Washington, he should follow through on President Trump’s request and #FreeJimmyLai
China’s leader, Xi Jinping, is arriving at the White House for a state dinner on Sept. 24.
He arrives with a broken promise to the people of Hong Kong: that they could keep the freedoms they already had. Well, that was until they exercised them.
Americans still have those freedoms. And now, more than ever, we need to show Xi Jinping exactly what they mean — and what they’re worth.
Jimmy Lai, the pro-democracy media publisher, embodies these freedoms. If we want to show Xi Jinping what freedom is worth, it must be reflected in Jimmy Lai’s release. President Trump said, "100%," he’d get him out. Now he must make good on his word.
Help us make sure that promise is kept. Speak up, share Jimmy Lai's story, and call for his freedom.
Free Jimmy Lai.

In memory of fellow prisoners denied funeral attendance
Today, @SpeakerPelosi stood on the floor of the House of Representatives to raise Joshua Wong's case on the day of his court hearing in Hong Kong. Speaking of Joshua, Jimmy Lai, and other prisoners wrongfully held in Hong Kong, Speaker Pelosi said: "We must speak out for freedom. We must not let this be ignored. The most horrible form of torture that the Chinese have over these people, is to tell them: 'nobody remembers you, or why you are here.' We want to be sure that they know that we remember them."
Thank you, Speaker Pelosi, for standing up for Hong Kong's political prisoners. Their names will not be forgotten, and neither will their fight for freedom.
Key things about Joshua’s case:
1. He is being prosecuted retroactively for “offences” committed before the National Security Law came into force.
2. There’s a real prospect of him serving time twice for the same “offence”.
HK judiciary is a tool of the executive.
The police brutality towards unarmed citizens at the Prince Edward MTR station on 31 August seven years ago left an indelible scar on the people of #HongKong.
Today, we commemorate the ‘8.31 incident’ not only to stand in solidarity with the victims, but also to remind the world about the tragic transformation of Hong Kong into a police state, to ensure that Hong Kong stands on the international agenda.
As remembrance of key anniversaries like this has become increasingly dangerous for those in Hong Kong, it is vital that those of us who have freedom continue to do so on their behalf. We continue to call for accountability from responsible officials for past and ongoing human rights violations.
Pay attention. Chinese guards also have these prohibited weapons at Royal Mint Court - the site of the new embassy. I have seen the film.
This is particularly timely because, in the judicial review against the mega-embassy we're fighting, the government case rests on China abiding by UK laws (our argument is that this assumption is irrational in light of recent behaviour).
From Belfast, where the Chinese Consulate built an unlawful development, to Manchester, where the Consul General assaulted a Hong Konger, to London, where guards carry prohibited weapons, Beijing has repeatedly shown contempt for our laws, and willingness to hide behind diplomatic immunity and inviolability.
And that's before you get to the rampant interference. @andyburnham and @AngelaRayner should concede the embassy judicial review and put this mad idea to bed.
@LaurenBeukes absolutely loving ‘The Shining Girls’ but confused as in the book, Zora is murdered and Harper injured 28Th Jan 1943, but her funeral and his hospital admission from the attack are written as 04th Jan 1932?
