Parti Bersama has been accused by Tony Pua of being a “spoiler” that contributed to BN’s victory. A few points should be made, in addition to those that have already been made by @Thevesh
1. Far-fetched to assume BERSAMA votes are transferrable to PH.
While BERSAMA's votes in Bukit Batu and Perling indeed larger than the winning majority, Tony’s argument makes a much bigger assumption: that every vote for BERSAMA would have gone to PH had BERSAMA not contested.
Some BERSAMA voters were fence-sitters. Some voted for BERSAMA precisely because they were unhappy with PH. Without BERSAMA, they might have stayed home, or even voted for BN. One could just as easily argue that BN’s majority in Bukit Batu and Perling might have been larger without BERSAMA. Neither claim can be proven simply by adding and subtracting votes.
2. Johor Jaya contradicts the spoiler narrative.
Johor Jaya was a PH-held seat that fell to BN. Yet BERSAMA received only 2,051 votes, far below BN’s winning majority. Applying Tony’s own logic, BERSAMA should have been a spoiler there, but we clearly did not determine the outcome there.
3. BERSAMA did not change the result in any UMNO-won seat.
In all the seats contested by BERSAMA, PH and UMNO, where UMNO emerged victory, PH would still have lost even if 100% of BERSAMA’s votes had been transferred to PH.
4. Votes belong to voters, not politicians/political party.
In a democracy, no party is entitled to anyone’s vote. A vote for BERSAMA is not a PH vote that has been “taken away”. They cannot assume that every voter who rejects them naturally belongs to their camp. Tony’s argument therefore appears to cherry-pick Bukit Batu and Perling to support a convenient narrative, while ignoring the other 13 seats contested by BERSAMA.
Many of us have long respected Tony Pua for his work on 1MDB. That is why this attack is particularly disappointing.
Instead of pointing fingers at a party that is barely two month old, it's best that PH/DAP leaders start reflecting on their own performance.
Regardless of what RR intended, no PH leader/supporter should be calling BERSAMA a 'spoiler' or blaming BERSAMA for the beating PH got yesterday - it's simply not supported by the final results.
Definition of 'spoiler':
1) PH lost the seat to BN
2) Votes won by BERSAMA > the margin of victory for BN
BERSAMA contested 15 seats. There are only 2 seats which meet this criteria:
- N.46 Perling
- N.51 Bukit Batu
In the 9 other seats which PH lost (which BERSAMA contested), PH's loss can't be 'blamed' on BERSAMA (not that I even agree with this idea of 'blame' in a democratic election anyway).
