Rice behaves in a deeply counter-intuitive way under pressure.

Press it slowly: it compresses uniformly and stays strong.
Hit it fast: it weakens along internal boundaries and fractures more easily.

This is called strain-rate dependence, and it was published in June 2026 by researchers studying the biomechanics of grain structures.

It's the opposite of what you'd intuitively expect.

Most materials get stronger under rapid compression (strain hardening).
Rice gets weaker.

Why it matters for engineering:

The research is being applied to adaptive armour, materials that change their structural response depending on how fast the impact arrives.

A slow load (like gradual building weight) requires stiffness.
A fast load (like a ballistic impact) may actually benefit from a material that partially absorbs energy by fracturing in controlled ways.
