What an incredible psychoanalysis of Elizabeth Holmes. This article also points to a darker element of human nature - denial of shadow self and its consequences.
"I suspect that E Holmes is not fully conscious of her own deception because she has constructed an elaborate system of defenses against recognizing the truth. I think she is psychotic, not in our ordinary sense of the term, meaning hallucinations or elaborate paranoid fantasies, but in having a fractured relationship to what Jacques Lacan called the symbolic order. She doesn't relate to language, and therefore truth and falsity, in a normal way"
While this paper focuses on E Holmes and psychotic/psychopathic features, I think the overall concept of denying your shadow self > therefore denying the bad parts of yourself > and projecting onto others to retain a false superior image is actually a schema seen in a lot of people (largely cluster b/dark triad). The goal with many of these people seems to be 1) absolve themselves of all wrongdoing 2) shift focus away from them and toward others 3) try to benefit from/get away with whatever they did while simultaneously disenfranchising other people and 4) maintain their fantasy of an ideal self (I’m benevolent, I’m a good person, I’m a victim, the person confronting me is in the wrong, etc) - aka denial.
This active and ongoing denial of self effectively prevents them from being able to integrate the darker parts of who they are and reach a place of acknowledgment > taking accountability > accepting blame > radical acceptance > CHANGE.
They will *never* admit that they do harmful/hurtful things because their internal firewall prevents them from being able to see that this is in fact a part of who they are. They can’t compute that they are doing it, and so effectively maintain some kind of split on themselves. With people like this, there is absolutely no tangible connection to the bigger picture, because to them it doesn’t exist. It’s like talking to a brick wall, or being taken on an infinite merry go round. There is no end.
