Born in the 1840s, Nehanda Charwe Nyakasikana, revered as a powerful spirit medium, led her people in a fierce struggle against the brutal forces of British colonisation in Zimbabwe. She inspired the Shona and Ndebele warriors to rise up, to fight with everything they had against the colonisers who had stolen their land and enslaved their people.
Her leadership during the First Chimurenga made her a target of the colonial regime, which feared the power she held over the hearts and minds of her people. In 1898, Nehanda was captured by the British and subjected to a sham trial, where she was sentenced to death by hanging. Even as they prepared to take her life, Nehanda refused to submit.
Her execution was meant to break the spirit of resistance, but instead, it immortalised her as a martyr for the cause of African liberation. Her prophecy, "My bones will rise again," foretold the fight for freedom that would ignite long after her death, and lead to the liberation of Zimbabwe.
The Shona people are part of the Bantu ethnic group native to Southern Africa, primarily Zimbabwe 🇿🇼. They are very powerful people in history known for establishing the great Zimbabwe Empire that once dominated southern Africa and forced the Swahilis to submit a tribute to the great Shona rulers.
Shona people's language is now mainly English and Shona (chiShona) spoken by the vast majority living in Zimbabwe. The Shona are also known for their stone sculptures, which were discovered during the 1940s.
The Shona religion is a blend of monotheism and veneration of ancestors. Today some Shona people believe in Islam and Christianity.
The mbira in Zimbabwe is used to govern the weather in times such as droughts and floods. It also chases away harmful spirits and cures sickness. The mbira is used in all celebrations, such as weddings and the installation of new chiefs, as well as death ceremonies. #Africa

They suffered and died for the Crown on the side of the so-called Allied Powers for a war that had nothing to do with them. Today, white veteran soldiers are being feted while African soldiers have been forgotten like dots in the sand. Vuka Africa!
