Read precisely 3 pages of 'Introduction to the Devout Life' and I've fallen in love with it all over again.
I want so much us to be eagles or swallows of devotion...rather than the chickens we tend to be. ๐ฆ >๐
St. Francis de Sales, pray for us ๐
@addheading No idea, but gas ofc from gasoline - a brand name. Cazoline/Gazoline was a C19th (British!) lighting oil brand. Petroleum is Latin for 'rock oil'.
Originally in the UK we called it 'motor spirit' (& plane fuel 'aviation spirit')...sounds cooler somehow...
In Tipner West Portsmouth there is a proposal to drain mudflats to build homes . We are in a climate emergency , sea levels are rising and they are going to build on mudflats . If you think this is idiotic too please sign this https://t.co/3PwdaazjOT @WildlifeTrusts#DontGoThere
@TheCrushedBones One knows armfuls of Catholics (& indeed separated members of the flock), who manage to be both joyful and moral. Indeed I've always thought that was sort of the point (without being holier-than-thou about it ofc). Respectfully maybe we should ask the Holy Father to get out more.
Never stop measuring societies by how they treat their most vulnerable members. The UK has no right to call itself a civilisation https://t.co/Ll7w6Pf8Xr
I don't want 'Britishness' I want somebody (anybody) to make television that might convince me to actually buy a set (or at least watch online).
At least we don't have absurd requirements for books.
Yet.
@TheCrushedBones I think we have to remember that many of his generation and the one immediately following still think of themselves as 'the younger generation'. When we're told WE don't want sound doctrine because it's unappealingly rigid, it's more a reflection of the speaker's wants/fears...
@Englishpapist@_Harriet90 The point being (she forgets to add) that it's a one-time weapon best used for something more than the (by-now nonsensical honours system).
And to be fair her predecessors doled out peerages on a whim, so at least winning a GS (as a qualifier w/out dropping a set) is something?
@Englishpapist@_Harriet90 It's power that exists in her not using it; doing so is end of system (or at least that monarch)
(There's a Mike Bartlett play, "Charles III" about this question, v worth watching, probably find-able somewhere as the BBC did a version with the late Tim Pigott-Smith as CIII.R.)
@TheCrushedBones So now instead I'm irate that the Sunday Times article is full of "...will announce..." phrases.
I detest reporting news before it's happened (not least because he could change what passes for his mind again).
@TheCrushedBones It *might* be that the more paranoid among us are being proven wrong, since they're also repealing the bulk of the Cv legislation (including the detention elements)
@justsnoozing A non-political answer, but I was literally just reading that Delta (as in Airlines) did this in the 1970s/80s, weeding out all but company yes-men, to prevent strikes.
Had exactly the kind of impact on its hitherto excellent (& since recovered) safety record you'd imagine...
Amazing that we consider the world to be in an advanced era, more civilised, human and tolerant than the ancient or the medieval, while millions of our neighbours are being systematically slaughtered for having any defect before they have a chance to breathe air outside the womb
This morning, @BBCr4today, gave their prominent platform of Thought for the Day to a Catholic commentator who proceeded to state, unchallenged, that abortion laws in the UK "demean people with disability."
