During WWII, 18-year-old Etowah County native L. C. Stanfield enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He went to war with a sixth-grade education and work experience as a welder. During shore leave over Christmas 1944, Stanfield met Jean Simpson. They married seventeen days later. #ALHistory
