Retired engineer. Decade+ of volunteer service to local science center. Author of two collections each of short STEM stories and Space tales based on USSF.
Aiken's Corner and @PaducahCity are 400 miles and 7 decades apart but you'll feel at home. The Davis kids keep Granddaddy's youthful antics alive. Book 2, Mayday! Mayday! just released. Lauren takes #STEM up a notch in the wild blue yonder. #stemeducation https://t.co/AiS7wytLbS
Wow! @azsciencecenter hit it out of the park. Yesterday's area code 602 promotion packed the house. All the science and fun you could handle for $6.02. A real family event to boot. Mom, pop, the kids, and even the cousins arriving at @W7ASC_ARC to send their names in Morse code.
@kcollazo I've had bobcats on roof (flat) for years. Mom seems to be teaching young hunting and whatever other skills. Sounds like horses running on roof. Game and fish says I have to make them unwelcome. Easier said than done.
@EpochTimes Sadly, it's a short distance from persecute to prosecute. But, seriously, state's rights will only lead to an inconsistent policy among the border states.
Happy #WorldEngineeringDay ! The Davis kids may be just youngsters, but they take #STEM to the limit in little Aiken's Corner. Just ask the local sheriff :-) Check out their #shortstories in Welcome to Aiken's Corner @amazon.
#EngineersWeek is ending so a fitting tribute to my introduction to #Engineering calculations is in order. #STEMeducation would do well to note its place in #history. Replaced by electronic handheld scientific calculators in 1967 and 1972, its just a memory now. No pun intended.
@Daily_Epsilon I started with y=mx+b, calculated the slope m to get the y intercept 3+5/6 = 23/6. Then pluged all into y=mx+b with y=0 and got 23 for x. I wouldn't recommend that for today's students but it came out of my 79 year-old brain like it was yesterday, or actually, further back.
@pwharris @AMSIschools Of course. Makes life more interesting. As an engineer, I tend to seek what is behind the shortcuts and then apply them as proven. Figure it out once, apply frequently. My daughter, and peditrician, was a math major in college. She might think I'm wrong to do that.
@pwharris All I wanted to say was that we are sometimes too quick to correct a student or question their work. That can have negative consequences such as implying we don't trust them.
It's Introduce A Girl to Engineering day! Your #1 girl in #Science#Coding#Engineering and #STEMeducation will love Laura Davis' #adventure in little Aiken's Corner as she schools the locals in getting things done. Check out Welcome to Aiken's Corner on Amazon.
@pwharris 13/7 is just under 2. Dividing by 4/5 is multiplying by 5/4 or increasing the value of 2 by 25% yielding just under 2.5 The closest answer is 2.
