Let me be direct: Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua will not call you, and for good reason. He didn’t campaign for you over the phone, but publicly. So, instead of calling you privately, he will address you publicly, where everything is transparent.

Nevertheless, Governor, as an advocate for calls, why didn’t you call the Deputy President yourself to inform him of your plans for Wakulima/Marikiti Market, as you've outlined here, instead of waiting to issue a statement? If dialogue is what you truly believe in, you had the opportunity to practice it first by reaching out to him.

Meanwhile, I didn’t realize that speaking one’s language automatically brands someone as tribal. Why didn’t you label him Swahili or British when he spoke in both Swahili and English? I remember you calling yourself "Baba Wambui" to the same traders in an effort to fit in ukitafuta kura. But sasa, Baba Wambui amekana watu wake.

I accompanied the Deputy President on today’s tour of Wakulima/Marikiti and Muthurwa Markets. I saw firsthand the terrible conditions traders face—sewage, garbage, congestion. These aren’t empty political claims. These are real issues. You know this too. There is an open plot of land adjacent to the market that is currently unused. Why not utilize that land to ease congestion and improve their working conditions, instead of forcing them to relocate? This is a clear, sensible solution that doesn’t require displacing traders or disrupting their livelihoods.

Governor, the issue is not about resisting order or safety—it’s about ensuring these traders have a fair opportunity to continue working in better conditions. If you’re truly focused on solving the problem, let’s fix the market where it stands. Moving traders elsewhere isn’t the only answer, and the alternatives are right in front of us.

The traders need solutions, not displacement. The people of Nairobi deserve leadership that listens and acts in their best interests, not decisions that further complicate their lives. Let’s work towards real, sustainable outcomes rather than pushing them aside.
