I've finally figured out what bugs me about "function extensionality": it says that merge sort and bogo sort are *equal*. So it builds in so much abstraction into the concept of 'function' that some fundamental aspects of computer science become invisible.
The word for 'other' in Arabic is 'aakhar' (آخر) .
'Aakhar' embeds the Arabic word 'akh', which means brother.
The English word 'brother' embeds the word 'other'.
It is fine to recognize the other in brother, but don't forget to look for your brother in the other.
10 years ago I wrote an article named "Why Emacs?", sharing my perspective on the One True Editor. Today I wrote its sequel https://t.co/M5J6a3dkky M-x forever!
In a rare public address (since the start of the pandemic) @GrandAyatullah al-Modarresi speaks about the dangers facing Muslim and the world, including war, environment, says no recourse but to turn to Prophetic household and seek guidance from learned, pious religious scholars
My physicist friends have no problem with the idea that a quantum spin is can be neither up nor down until measured, but are deeply disturbed that idea that a proposition does not have to be true or false. My guts half agree.
Should Type Theory replace Set Theory as the foundation of Mathematics? ~ Thorsten Altenkirch. https://t.co/aNjvPZjvyK #Logic#Math#TypeTheory#SetTheory
A lot of (good) PL design goes:
1. what can you (now) say?
2. what can you (now) omit?
3. what *should* you say?
4. what do you actually want to say?
(there's more, but I'm exploring the linguistic side here)
One nuance that's often missed when looking at OSS: it's mostly funded by goodwill.
It's very rare for maintainers to get enough sponsors to replace their day job. In many cases the person doing the work already has a job and is motivated by interest.
SectorLISP has achieved its goal of creating a LISP tiny enough to fit in the boot record of a floppy disk. Since that's 512 bytes LISP is now tied with FORTH to be the most lightweight programming language in the world. https://t.co/G7WTOCwZ3D
Glad we're finally following Lisp machines into the meta-verse. But I'm still waiting for 21st century support for the super-verse and the hyper-verse. (hold all three for the meta-super-hyper-verse).
One of the most important reminders for students of knowledge:
Don’t use religion to promote yourself.
