🕋 THE YEAR OF THE ELEPHANT — ʿĀM AL-FĪL
The Year of the Elephant (ʿĀm al-Fīl) is mentioned in the Qur’an in Surah Al-Fil (Chapter 105).
The Qur’an does not give the year as a number. Instead, it tells us about the extraordinary event that became associated with its name.
What happened?
An army came toward Makkah intending to destroy the Kaʿbah.
Allah says:
«“Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with the companions of the elephant?”
— Qur’an 105:1»
Allah then describes how He made their plan fail:
«“And He sent against them flocks of birds, striking them with stones of baked clay, and He made them like eaten-up straw.” — Qur’an 105:3–5»
🐘 Who were the “companions of the elephant”?
The Qur’an does not name their leader.
However, classical Islamic historical and tafsir sources traditionally identify them as the army of Abraha, the ruler of Yemen, who marched toward Makkah with elephants, intending to destroy the Kaʿbah.
The event is traditionally placed around 570 CE, the approximate year in which the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was born. Because of this event, the Arabs came to know it as the Year of the Elephant.
Why is this story important?
Surah Al-Fil reminds us that:
• The Kaʿbah is under the protection of Allah.
• No amount of military power can overcome Allah’s decree.
• Allah can destroy the plans of those who oppose His command.
• The people of Makkah were being reminded of Allah’s power and protection over the Sacred House.
There is also a beautiful connection between Surah Al-Fil (105) and Surah Quraysh (106).
After mentioning how Allah protected the Kaʿbah and destroyed the army of the elephant, the next surah reminds Quraysh of the security and blessings they enjoyed in Makkah.
“Let them worship the Lord of this House.” — Qur’an 106:3
One important distinction
The Qur’an confirms the destruction of the companions of the elephant, but it does not mention Abraha by name, give the year as 570 CE, or provide all the details found in the traditional narrative.
Those details come from Islamic historical and tafsir traditions, not directly from the Qur’an.
The central lesson remains clear:
When Allah protects something, no army, power, or plan can overcome His decree.
اللهم احفظ بيتك الحرام 🤲🏽
Alhamdulillah...Islam teaches us this almost 1500years ago through prophet Muhammad (S.A.W). There is no way he knows all these that time unless it was revealed to him....check his teachings you will be amazed what you will learned.
