@kelli_gehman@aim503 Hmmm... I'm going to have to disagree. Some issues should be taught at home by parents if at all. Why make kids "little adults?" It also takes away from the parent's authority, almost putting SS in the parent's seat. #511global Joseph
Comparative: Gutek seems to view China’s “face emphasis” rather subjectively. He calls the education system “performative” which to me sounds unprofessional. However, his claims remind me of the Russian repetitive model in which instruction is very linear. #511global Joseph
Connecting: Two-track system favors urban over rural schools. This article shows gov't involvement in Hong Kong, but I wonder about those rural schools who REALLY need the books? https://t.co/anOyh22ctT #511 Joseph
Connecting: Two-track systems seem to be similar to India’s “night school” program, mostly attended by girls in rural countries. Both countries seem to be unable to reach the rural areas, which is similar to the US. #511global Joseph
Reflective: It seems that most cultures we’ve studied, with the exception of the US and UK have a very centralized education system. Perhaps this is due to the history of mistrust in the Fed. PRC4 modernizations seem to put full weight onto the national gov’t. #511 global, Joseph
@jmconrow @aim503 Quite true both of you. I'd only add that the country needs to be able to provide financial/social backing to create effective education. China, like India and Japan, appears to have had "big dreams", such as the Great leap forward, with nominal results. #511global Joseph
@AshleyFultz723@kelli_gehman I agree. How can students truly be prepared for higher ed if the foundation isn't there? Also, it seems that India is struggling with some aspects of higher ed in the technical sense as per this article.

Connecting: India's dropout rate seems to rival that of Mexico. Could it be that imperialism hinders the growth and educational development of these countries? Or is the converse true: that imperialism actually lays the foundation for educational success? Joseph #511global
Connecting:Gutek says "which ed. leveels should be allocated scarce economic resources?" He claims that higher ed gets the lion's share but this article indicates seems to indicate the contrary. https://t.co/QKcy3lWszK Joseph #511global
Reflective: Gutek doesn't seem to reveal much about the pre-Dravidian time period. Could it be that the invading Aryans brought a more comprehensive social system with them? #511global Joseph
@aim503 That is impressive. I think about the Race to the Top initiative and NCLB. Funding based on performance. :( What problems would we have if ALL districts received equal funding, I wonder? #511global
@kelli_gehman I think it's reflected in their terms for education. According to Gutek, Japan is known as the "educational path society." Also the emperor's oath was pretty impressive. #511global
Reflective: It strikes me as almost odd that Japan seems to have transitioned from a feudalistic, military era to a modern era without much violent internal conflict. Despite the military prowess of the samurai doesn’t seem to be too violent a transition. #511 Joseph
Reflective#2: Japan has undergone a dramatic swing from one extreme to another. From extreme control under local samurai to extreme control under a centralized government. I wonder if their education system is as stagnant as France’s? #511 Joseph
Comparative: Japan seems to harmonize its “church-state” relations whereas Western nations strive to disassociate them. France, the US etc… have ongoing friction between church & state but the East (Japan and China) don’t seem to have that problem. #511 Joseph
Connecting:Gutek comments that there weren’t enough funds available to create the Fundamental Code plan. 100+ years later it seems that Japan is struggling to maintain what it’s built. https://t.co/46VN87kngy #511 Joseph
@aim503 I agree with your quote. And, as a parent with very conservative Christian views, I'm really reluctant to expose my kids to these kinds of influences. The Internet is bad enough! So... we've been TV free for years and LOVE it! #511global Joseph
Reflective #2: Sesame Street got in trouble by tackling HIV awareness but the bigger question here is, should children’s TV stations involve themselves in these kind of issues? Where do we draw the line? Joseph #511global
@aim503 @jmconrow Correct. I think part of its impact comes from the fact that they're trying to create such an "authentic" experience. I like what the Bangladeshi producer said: "We don't need to copy a rich country, just take your best and give it to the world." #511global Joseph
