Burhan and Hemedti got away with committing atrocities for a very long time. It is high time to hold them to account.

Defecting from Sudan's Rapid Support Forces should not amount to getting a free pass from responsibility for serious international crimes. Sudan should cooperate with ongoing int'l & regional investigations @hrw

Today marks 9,000 days since Swedish-Eritrean journalist and writer #DawitIsaak was imprisoned by the Eritrean authorities without charge, trial, or access to due process.
Nine thousand days is not only a staggering measure of time, but a stark reminder of the continued impunity surrounding these detentions and the systematic suppression of media freedom in Eritrea.
We call on the Government of Eritrea to immediately and unconditionally release Dawit Isaak and all imprisoned journalists and prisoners of conscience.
We also call on Sweden and the European Union to intensify their efforts on Dawit Isaak’s behalf and to press for clear answers regarding his condition and whereabouts.
As we mark this solemn milestone, we stand in solidarity with Dawit Isaak, his family, his colleagues, and all those who continue to fight for freedom of expression, human dignity, and justice in Eritrea.

A huge congratulations to Dr. @mutasimali3, RWCHR Senior Legal Advisor, on completing the defense of his SJD dissertation at @AUWCL!
We are so proud to be working with you in common cause for peace and justice in Sudan.
Join us in celebrating Mutasim’s extraordinary and well-deserved accomplishment.
Just looking at messages between Hamid and myself since 2018, Hamid was among everything, the kindest. He cared at a time of indifference, resilient at time of despair, bias to the people at time of polarised voices, defiant at time of cowardliness. We are mourning a Sudan in you
Allah yerhamak @HamidMurtada.
Losing you feels unreal. You were one of the kindest, most genuine people I knew — always respectful, always thoughtful, always present for others. Sudan didn't just lose a bright mind, it lost someone who truly cared and gave his best.
Your absence leaves a heavy silence, but your character, your warmth, and your integrity will never be forgotten.
Rest in peace, my friend. You will be deeply missed.
As disturbing as it is to see RSF defecters warmly welcomed by SAF, this should neither surprise us nor prompt us to want SAF to hold them to account. In fact, we should even be more concerned if SAF decides to prosecute them. Genuine accountability cannot occur under the current circumstances.
Conflict Insights Group, led by @just1nlynch, has just provided vital evidence linking the UAE *state* to the supply of Colombian mercenaries to the Rapid Support Forces.
He has tracked phones from Colombia, to UAE military bases, and then to Darfur. See "Device 2".

🔖 My latest on #Sudan 🇸🇩 as war moves into year 4
🔸A regionalized war, dividing the country, with no sign of stalemate
🔸A convoluted diplomatic scene
🔸 Sudan urgently needs a credible civilian-led political process: Berlin + Quintet must be built on

To mark the horrific anniversary of the war in Sudan, we called on #Canada to urgently scale up its response by adopting a robust action plan.
The plan includes recognizing the massacres in Darfur as genocide, sanctioning perpetrators and enablers, closing loopholes that allow Canadian-made weapons to reach Sudan, expanding immigration pathways to reunite Sudanese-Canadian families, pursuing justice in international courts, and more.

This week, we mark ten years since tech entrepreneur and philanthropist #EkparAsat was arbitrarily detained and disappeared into the shadows of the vast detention network in Xinjiang, China.
During these tortuous years, we have stood shoulder to shoulder with Ekpar’s sister @RayhanAsat (lawyer, RWCHR Senior Fellow) in her struggle to secure his freedom.
In a sham trial, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison on false charges of “inciting ethnic hatred and ethnic discrimination.”
In reality, he is being persecuted because he is Uyghur.
Ten years on, we renew our call for his immediate and unconditional release.
His case is not only a grave and ongoing injustice, but a reminder that the cruelty of persecutory detention tears families and entire communities apart.
As Ottawa and Beijing seek to revitalize relations, we call on Canadian leaders to seize the opportunity afforded by this moment to advocate for the release of all those unjustly behind bars in China.

The Berlin Conference was important in providing a platform for Sudanese to engage and keeping the global attention on Sudan. Yet, it is another gathering that will do little to stop the atrocities. The escalating violence can only be ceased if the conveners of Berlin and the like decide to end the external support to genocidaires and enforce civilian protection.
Reminder to join us TOMORROW, alongside the Global Accountability Network, @SARCILaw, @AfricanCentre, @PILPG, and @asilorg for our second roundtable discussion on #Sudan.
This time, we are focusing on the role of the African Union and regional accountability mechanisms in preventing and punishing mass atrocities.
Hear from @adejokemusic, Senior Research Fellow, The Soufan Center, @NgoziEzeilo, Member of the UN Fact-Finding Mission for Sudan, @yonahdiamond, Senior Legal Counsel, RWCHR (moderator), and @alimoss2001, Director, African Center for Justice and Peace Studies.

On #YomHaShoah, we honour the memory of the six million Jews who were murdered in one of the darkest chapters of human history, and we remember those who risked their lives to resist the atrocities of the Nazi regime, including humanitarian hero, Raoul Wallenberg.
We reflect on the horrors of the past while confronting a present in which antisemitism is not only resurging, but being normalized in public discourse and too often ignored. Silence is not neutrality. In moments like these, it is a form of acquiescence.
"May this Yom HaShoah be not only an act of remembrance, which it is, but may it also be an ongoing remembrance and commitment to act on behalf of our common humanity." – @IrwinCotler, RWCHR Founder and International Chair
Let us renew our commitment to education and advocacy to ensure that “Never Again” is not just a vague wish, but a concrete promise; one that is upheld for Jews and for all people.

Please join us for a roundtable on mass atrocities in #Sudan and the role of the #AfricanUnion and regional accountability mechanisms in preventing and punishing mass atrocities.
Sudan has endured repeated cycles of mass atrocities in which accountability has been the exception and not the rule.
The perpetrators responsible — Sudan’s main warring parties and external actors — are well known. What remains uncertain is the political will to hold them to account.
As the war in Sudan drags into its fourth year, this expert roundtable will examine:
1. What is the African Union’s mandate and responsibility to prevent and halt mass atrocities?
2. How can African accountability mechanisms and courts more effectively address grave international crimes?
3. What legal, diplomatic, and institutional reforms are needed to strengthen African-led responses?
We hope you can join us.
