Regardless of if you're an MT hipster that's bored with all the Hamilton craze, you have to admit that it gathered a whole new audience to the theater, and showed off that diversity in casting is desired and celebrated, especially in the current political climate.
Bruce fixing her map was very Seurat-esque. This is the only show with kids in it that I can enjoy without getting annoyed. They have to be amazing performers. What a magical melding of honesty and artistry that makes Fun Home heartwarming and heartbreaking all at once.
I wonder how much more I would hate Jaime if his story was the one that went backwards. L5Y is such a bop and I can swim in Norbert Leo Butz's chocolate fondue voice, but I've never liked Jamie. There is NO EXCUSE to cheat on someone. Break up with her if you're over it, bitch.
"It's men like you who'll keep it great."If this isn't some sick foreshadowing of 2016 elections I don't know what is. Ragtime's use of the generations (grandfather, father, younger brother, little boy) reiterates that "you've got to be carefully taught." DO GOOS.
I cry every time I hear I'll Cover You Reprise. Rent lets an upper-middle class and quite possibly apathetic audience see the heartache and struggles that those who suffer from HIV/AIDS, and their loved ones, go through. Sidenote: La Vie Boheme in the Sutton. Let's Make it happen
This beautiful and truthful story of "making it" in the business provokes thought in every performer about our pasts, our love, and where we go after our bodies can't perform anymore. I don't know if I fit any one performer (but definitely not Connie I swear to god I am 5'6"...)
Analyzing Sondheim, melodic motifs appear not only throughout Sunday, but in his work as a whole, like the first three notes of "The Blob" played in "Putting it Together." Sondheim's art he leaves behind is truly worthwhile. It costs him something. I'm crying and I don't know why
The melody for "Wait" is totally Sorry-Grateful? But man is he clever (quad rhyme: "personable" and coercin' a bull.") My fav pet peeve is when teen boys sing Being Alive in auditions. Also Stephen Schwartz totally plagiarized the chorus of Another Hundred People for Meadowlark.
Idk how orthodox, but I am surprised that Andrew Lloyd Webber can actually write rock bops (just because of how much I hate School of rock) and props to the versatility of his music... also YAS ASIAN MARY MAGDALENE.
Viva La Vie Boheme! Hair is a fun and fantastical trip literally and metaphorically, and still applies today. Love must trump hate, but maybe with less drugs and orgies...
I was sobbing after finishing Cabaret, so I am currently watching Legally Blonde the Musical to cheer myself up (sorry Brian). So many numbers that balance art, meaning, and shock value. But to be clear, Hawaiian pineapples are indeed as good as diamonds (and better than Cali's)
Also, I think it's important to remember that this is not necessarily an accurate musical about Judaism. Here's a vid I found of modern-day Hasidic Jews watching scenes from the movie of Fiddler on the Roof: https://t.co/s5vPV8l9Gs
Tevye talking to himself while making decisions is the og Soliloquy (take that Les Mis). I love the 4th wall breaks, as well as the progression of Tevye's soliloquies, especially the last, where he finally breaks. Also, it looks like one of the Syracuse faculty is in the show...
Jeez I don’t know if I love or hate Rose. I hate people who try to live vicariously through their kids, but at the same time, she sacrificed food and comfort for a far-fetched dream, and gave Louise a better life. Sidenote, those kiddie shows reminded me of Toddlers and Tiaras...
SIDENOTE: RIP Marni Nixon, you really deserved more credit... you were the real life Cathy Seldon, supplying the angelic voices of Eliza Doolittle AND Maria. Not to mention dealing with Natalie Wood and Audrey Hepburn who were too proud to admit they couldn't sing...
West Side Story: The Bard appealing to modern audiences. Prejudice (yay interracial couples!), corruption of law enforcement officers, hate crime, and the fact that these issues still remain today, makes me cringe for America as much as watching Fergie sing the national anthem...
