VIDEO: Nigeria achieves first tele-robotic surgery in landmark medical breakthrough

Nigeria has achieved its first tele-robotic surgery, with a surgeon in Mowe, Ogun State, remotely operating on a kidney cancer patient in Abuja, more than 500 km away.

The procedure, a robot-assisted right radical nephrectomy, was carried out at Redeemer’s Health Village in collaboration with RoboMed Global.

Test Before Treat

If only 5% of fevers in Lagos are due to malaria, why are we still treating fever as malaria?

That is the question behind Lagos State’s Test Before Treat policy.

Our extensive fever study, involving more than 78,000 people across 514 healthcare outlets, found that only about 5% of people with fever tested positive for malaria. That means 95% had another cause of fever.

For years, the pathway has often been:

Patient feels unwell → assumes malaria → buys an antimalarial → if still unwell, moves on to another medicine, including an antibiotic.

That is not good enough.

The correct pathway is:

Patient feels unwell → sees a healthcare provider → history and examination → appropriate test → diagnosis → appropriate treatment.

This is why Lagos State has adopted Test Before Treat. It is a policy based on our data and our changing malaria epidemiology.

Community pharmacies and Patent Medicine Stores are often the first point of contact for people with fever. If we are asking Lagosians to test before treating malaria, quality assured malaria rapid diagnostic tests must be available at these points of care, with clear referral pathways for patients who test negative.

My message to the public is simple:

Do not assume every fever is malaria. Test before you treat.

If the test is positive, treat appropriately. If it is negative, do not simply move on to another medicine. Find out what is actually causing the illness.

This is about better diagnosis, better use of medicines and better healthcare. It is also about protecting our antibiotics from unnecessary use and helping Lagos move closer to malaria elimination.

Test. Diagnose. Treat. Track.
