One of my favorite features of The Week magazine is The Book List. Each week a different author selects six worthy books. Idea: have students emulate this. What 6 books (or movies, or video games...) do they recommend? Write 3-4 sentence blurbs for each.

I would treat "test writing" as a separate genre, and I would only teach it right before the test. The rest of the year is "real world" writing. If kids write well, they will do fine on the tests. They will not write well if they only do test prep writing.
