Awami League government's dependency on neighboring India has been exposed since the publication of a low-quality work by the Indian Bengali daily @MyAnandaBazar , which said:
“India has communicated to the US that the ongoing efforts to destabilize the Hasina government are unfavorable for India's overall security as a neighboring country and for the broader South Asian region. India is displeased with the current role of the US in relation to the upcoming elections in Bangladesh, and this message has been conveyed to Washington.”
The newspaper quoted an unnamed source.
What strikes me as particularly awkward is why Bangladesh should concern itself with India's feelings. Aren't we a sovereign and independent nation? Are the people of Bangladesh content with India's support, which has always been questionable, for the @albd1971 regime over the past 14 years?
Private entities with close relationships to the Indian Prime Minister have secured lucrative contracts, all at the expense of Bangladesh, and whose interest is served by this? India might have an electoral democracy in place, but has the Indian incumbent government demonstrated any respect towards its Muslim minority when they were persecuting Muslims in the country? Muslim activists' residences were demolished, and lives were lost over the sale of beef in various instances. However, that is an entirely separate topic for discussion.
Tell me what suggestion the @MEAIndia came up with when the Bangladesh’s security apparatus abducted numerous opposition leaders-activists, and what role India played when the country’s elite force was staging extrajudicial killings?
Respected organizations like @amnestysasia , @hrw , and @RFKHumanRights and others have been demanding the release of unlawfully detained individuals. What about India, on the contrary? What role has @ihcdhaka played so far in creating a level playing field for all major political parties for a participatory general election? If they are so keen on the political affairs of Bangladesh, we would expect some engagement from their end, but have we seen any? Yes, we have heard from newspapers like Anandabazar that India is 'unhappy'.
Is India 'unhappy' because the sanctions imposed by the @USTreasury have curbed the brutality of state forces? Can India provide an explanation for the significant reduction in enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings in Bangladesh since December 10th, 2021?
Probably they are aware that, on a global perspective, the USA still matters.
Bangladesh had enough of India for the last 14 years, and it won't mind a bit of the West for a change. And it's about Bangladesh and its people; not about @albd1971 , @bdbnp78 , Hasina, or Khaleda.
