The Maldives has one of the highest migrant-worker ratios in #SouthAsia. Census 2022 found that about one in every four people living in the #Maldives is a foreigner & that about 40 percent of the foreign population lives in Malé. It also found that more than half of foreign residents in Malé are from #Bangladesh 🇧🇩 @HomeMinistrymv@ImmigrationMV
Finnish diver Patrik Grönqvist received the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic from President Sergio Mattarella. The honour was conferred for his professional and humane efforts in recovering the bodies of the Italian victims from the tragic cave diving accident in the Maldives’ Dhevana Kandu (Vaavu Atoll) in May 2026. #CaveDive #Maldives @DAN_Europe

True for Maldives and Sri Lanka as well. Ordinary people prioritise jobs, stable prices, tourism recovery and debt sustainability over foreign policy shifts. Geopolitical rhetoric may grab headlines, but economic pressures quickly bring pragmatism; balancing India, China and others for survival. Economy remains the real priority.
🚢 Historic Voyage Begins!
The Guardian-Class Patrol Boat, gifted by Australia, has set sail from Western Australia to the Maldives, crewed entirely by brave @MNDF_Official Coast Guard sailors. This marks the first time #MNDF personnel are undertaking such a long transoceanic journey. A new chapter in #Maldives-#Australia defence cooperation ! 🇲🇻🤝🇦🇺

Luxury resorts in the #Maldives typically benefit from strong demand and attractive margins. #Amaya Kuda Rah also appears to have maintained good guest ratings. Yet the owner recorded significant impairments, sustained losses, brought in an international operator & is now selling below the original acquisition price. That points to a potential asset-specific issue such as lease terms, financing costs or capital expenditure requirements rather than a broader weakness in the Maldives tourism market. @Hayleys_Group #SriLanka

Every marine accident in the #Maldives is a reminder that safety cannot be taken for granted. From cargo vessel and landing-craft disasters to speedboat crashes and diving fatalities, 2025–2026 has already seen multiple serious incidents. Police data previously showed 112 tourist deaths in marine related incidents from 2020–2023 alone.
🚨Marine safety must become a national priority ! 🛟@MNDF_Official@PoliceMv@MoTmv@MoTCAmv
The recent India-Nepal border controversy was triggered less by developments on the ground and more by political messaging. Nepal’s Prime Minister reignited debate after suggesting that Nepal may also have encroached on #Indian territory and calling for UK involvement in resolving the dispute.
India’s MEA spokesperson was unequivocal in response: “It should be clear to all concerned that there is no role for any third parties in a bilateral matter between #India and #Nepal.”
Nepali PM Balendra Shah has reignited a 200-year-old border dispute with India after claiming in parliament that Nepal has also encroached on Indian territory.

The Maldives reclaimed more than 4,000 hectares of land between 2000 and 2024, reportedly more than the combined total reclaimed across Europe and Africa during the same period.
A remarkable engineering achievement, but one that also raises important questions about population trends, environmental resilience and long-term national planning.

The Maldives tourism model depends heavily on Gulf hubs such as #Dubai, #Doha and #AbuDhabi. When conflict disrupts those gateways, the impact is felt directly through connectivity, bookings & visitor arrivals.
This is not just an airline issue. It is a structural economic vulnerability and a reminder of the need to diversify both tourism source markets and routing dependencies. @MoTmv@visitmaldives #Maldives
The Maldives, Seychelles and nearby islands depend on Persian Gulf carriers to bring visitors to their shores. With those airlines cutting flights, the tropical destinations are suffering collateral damage from the war in Iran https://t.co/ppTmU7vtSU

A growing theme at the Shangri-La Dialogue is that many Asian countries are no longer relying exclusively on the traditional US security umbrella.
As strategic uncertainty increases, states across the Indo Pacific are diversifying defence partnerships, expanding domestic capabilities & pursuing more flexible security arrangements. This is not necessarily a rejection of the United States, but an adaptation to a more complex geopolitical environment. #IISS_SLD26 #Singapore
