Fixing the PF-Era Engineering Woes Behind Zambia’s Load Shedding Crisis

Around 2014–2017, Zambia (and Zimbabwe) upgraded the Kariba power stations with new Chinese turbines. On paper, capacity was supposed to jump from 750MW to 1080MW.
But here’s the reality: those turbines use more water and produce less electricity.
The old turbines were actually more efficient, whereas the new ones, actually “drink” more water to make the same power — so every hour they run, Kariba drains faster.

These new turbines were designed for high water levels, not drought conditions. When the lake drops (as it often does now), they lose pressure — wasting even more water for less output.
What does that mean? Instead of getting “more power,” we got turbines that make it harder for Kariba to stay full. The result? Low lake levels, less generation, and longer load shedding.

This wasn’t a natural disaster — it was a planning disaster. We chased bigger numbers (installed capacity) instead of smarter efficiency.
Until we fix this and match turbine design to the real Zambezi water realities, Kariba will keep running on empty — and we Zambians will keep experiencing power outages.

So, What government can realistically do,

So, What can Government Realistically Do To Fix Kariba’s Efficiency Challenges — short, medium and long-term:

Admit the design mismatch — and commission an independent technical audit.
Start with honesty. Commission an open, independent audit of the Kariba turbine performance. Zambians deserve to know what actually happened? Who did/knew what? How much water is being lost per megawatt generated, and whether efficiency losses can be corrected.
Transparency builds trust to prevent similar occurrences in the future

If it isn’t too late, renegotiate with the supplier and financing partners.
If the turbines were wrongly specified or performing below contracted efficiency, government should explore legal or technical renegotiation. Other countries have successfully done this under performance-based contracts.

Govt should continuo to push and Invest in complementary generation — solar, wind, and pumped hydro.
Kariba cannot and should not carry Zambia alone anymore.
Solar farms can provide daytime power and let Kariba rest. Pumped storage (using excess solar to pump water back up) is a smart future investment.

Strengthen Zambezi water governance.
Water is the real currency of power. Government should push for a stronger Zambezi River Authority mandate — with science -based water release rules, real-time monitoring, and penalties for misuse.

Let’s plan for climate reality, not capacity dreams.
We should stop planning for “1,000 MW” when water can only support 500 MW.
It’s better to plan first for resilience, not prestige. Match technology to hydrology — that’s how you future-proof energy security.

Zambia’s energy future can’t remain hostage to Kariba. We’re a nation endowed with rivers — the Kafue, Luangwa, Chambeshi, Kalungwishi — each with clean, untapped hydro potential. With smart investment in small and medium run-of-river plants and modern transmission lines, we could power communities sustainably without draining one dam dry.

What’s needed is smarter water governance and efficient technology — not more megawatts on paper. If Zambia treats its rivers as power corridors, we can build a resilient, homegrown grid that keeps the lights on even when Kariba runs low. ⚡️

I sadly learned that Last year, 26 Wildlife Conservation officers were killed in the line of duty in Zambia.
That's more than Police officers and Military personnel killed in line duty combined in the same period.

I wasn't aware protecting our nature could be this dangerous.

Zambia will observe two days of national mourning, February 24 and February 25, respectively, which are the memorial and burial services of the Namibian President, Dr. Hage Geingob.

This was announced by Zambia's Cabinet Secretary, Patrick Kangwa, in a media statement.

Additionally, all Zambian flags will fly at half-mast for five days, starting on the 21st of February.

Kangwa said President Hakainde Hichilema's directives are a mark of respect for the late President Geingob.
