@craigdreves@OssiningSchools @ferzeen_shamsi @Nyack_Schools can we do this in Nyack please? So many amazing local artists who would gladly offer their talent- and I bet lots of youth groups who would volunteer to help !!
@craigdreves@Dr_P_Roman@Nyack_Schools Welcome to Nyack and UNES- I’m excited to meet you! Parent of a third grader and kindergartener (and one in a few years) here.
Look at the educational leadership in your school, district, college…and the world of research and professional learning facilitatation. What do you see?
@MzEmilyRebaza Agree again! If that weren’t the case than we could simply let an online platform do all the teaching. But teachers are important and so are their instincts and the way they adapt curriculum
In the Fight Over How to Teach Reading, This Guru Makes a Major Retreat https://t.co/sBR0zOa3pp I believe in the science of reading, teaching phonics 1st/foremost,not guessing And I believe in the power of growing readers who love books, can make choices and are independent 🧵
@MzEmilyRebaza I agree. And there is pressure to use curriculum “w fidelity” which I get but also.. we have to teach the kids in front of us and we have to be grounded in research
6) I think there is a place for balanced literacy AND the science of reading- all in the name of responding to our children’s needs. When it comes to reading, that starts w phonics. But also w learning to love to read.
2) I also think it’s important to remember that the best teachers and leaders are responsive ones who use their training to meet the needs of the kids in front of them- regardless of the curricular program.
5) no teacher should feel like they are not doing enough because they are complying w a resource. Teachers should be empowered to teach what they know kids need.
4) which makes me think even more that teacher training- both at graduate level and regular PD- needs to be about RESPONSIVE Teaching and yes, grounded in the science of reading.
3) I remember my first few teaching at PS94 in Bk. We used UoS and I didn’t have the confidence or training- but DEF the gut instinct to know that this program alone wasn’t supporting my MLLs. I tried my best but I still mourn for the students who didn’t get what they needed..
Are you ready to W.I.N (Work in Nyack)??Looking to work in a progressive district with a focus on preparing tomorrow's leaders through innovation, equity, and optimism??Look no further!!@Nyack_Schools is hiring STREAM Elementary Teachers for our new active learning spaces.
A very important article!! We must consider the specific needs of every population - there is never a one size fits approach when it comes to literacy !! Thanks @JoseMedinaJr89 for sharing
