“Nah, ‘just a little cough, remember?”
Zeke joked back, quickly embracing his friend with a tight hug. That familiar feeling their bond brought him came rushing back, and with Trish there, too, he was home again.
“Missed you like crazy, Brother… Got a damn clue how the hell—“
“—this caliber of damage…”
Zeke gestures towards a nearby couch, but before Cole can get anywhere, Zeke extends his hand to grab Cole’s. “Who else but my brother, huh?”
It was clear that Zeke was elated, even if he was playing it off. But Cole knew Zeke better.
“Can’t—“
Zeke listened as Cole explained his journey. It made some sense, and yet none at all. The absurdity of their lives didn’t seem to end, even after death.
Zeke glanced up towards the sounds of the roaring storm, “Guess I shoulda saw that comin’. I once knew a guy that can do—“
—to face them, but does anyway. He looks at Cole with a pained smile. He cleared his throat, keeping himself together, and making space for Cole to say something first. And maybe, he’s still waiting for proof that he wasn’t seeing things.
—how to react otherwise.
Deja vu, this was. He had already taken Trish in when she came back. Now, that second piece that was missing was here again.
“…Always knew you two were a good lil’ pair, you’re both great at givin’ a man a damn heart attack…” Zeke says, hesitant—
—
On autopilot, Zeke stepped over and allowed for Trish to pull Cole inside, making sure the door was sealed behind them. He had for once tuned out the sound of the heavy rain beating down on their rooftop.
He had to make a joke, some kind of light of this, he has no idea—
Zeke’s friend made her way past the two after he gave her a nod.
He was standing behind Trish in silence in the meantime, watching as they exchanged their affection, unable to properly process that his best friend was in front of him. The one he laid to rest himself.
—
Zeke scratched the top of his head with a deep sigh, both relieved and terrified Trish was seeing this as well. He’s quick to collect himself, allowing the seal of the door to ease and approaching behind her.
"Okay is it b-" Trish finally turned her attention to the monitor, her jaw dropped as her grip on the jacket tightened. Last she'd seen him she was staring up in his arms, those same eyes were there on the screen. He was there. She turned on her heel, heading for the door already
“Get movin’. We got some company at the front, and I need you to take a look…” is all he can think to say, wanting his friend to see it for herself before he decides he’s going crazy.
Zeke led her out of her spot and towards the monitors.
Trish wakes up with a startled gasp, hands wiping at her groggy eyes. "Wha- Zeke, you good?" Concern seeped through the tiredness, she slowly yet surely sat up, Cole's jacket as a makeshift blanket shifting down to her lap.
—is playing tricks on him. It was cruel. But thinking about the storm, the weird call… it starts to click.
He takes a step back, eyes fixated on the screen.
The only thing he can think to do now is to run over to @EchoOfEC and quickly wake her up.
A knock to the front entrance and a wave to the camera, she waits out entry with the mystery man.
And before Zeke can get to opening the door… he spots who’s standing behind her on the monitor.
His blood runs cold, unsure what to make of what he’s looking at. Like his mind—
Cole hears her pleas, seeing she was DUP or first son, he lowered his hand, jumping over puddles and avoiding rain water as he followed her, the storms winds preventing his voice from even being heard
He hopes she can forgive him, he’s been on edge lately
‘What is this place…’
But the figure wasn’t there to hurt Cole. Seeing he was a conduit, the woman shouted past the blowing winds, yelling out for him to follow her. She intended on leading him down to the entrance.
His powers acting up and evolving was hardly news
The silence threw Cole off, so when he felt the person get close, he fired a warning bolt up
“I’d be a hell of a lot more careful if I was you pal…one wrong move and I fry the both of us ! Only for me it won’t be so bad….”
Zeke takes a glance at the monitors, barely catching the sight of a figure out in the storm. He’s only able to see a lower half, the camera sitting at an odd angle for the rooftop.
A teammate of his that lived in the same bunker was prepared to confront whoever it was.
Cole examined the surroundings, this place was like an unassuming fortress…he could feel the sensors he triggered, physically feel them pulse back to the monitor
“Where are you Jedediah…”
There was water everywhere from the rain…place was like a minefield for cole 💦
Zeke was leaned over in his workshop area, drawing up a few sketches for an idea he had. He’s still at it with the builds.
He goes to lift the beer bottle to his lips when a sound grabs his attention.
There’s a ping from a nearby monitor, someone triggering the sensors.
Cole over here, the rain had let up but the thunder and lightning remained strong
The wind even stronger
He gripped onto a power line and shot straight up, doing a proper super hero landing on the roof
‘….oh fuck me that was cool…’
—
Considering the inquiry, he nods.
“I guess I can hold onto it. Good thinkin’, man. Can’t have that junk out for any John Doe to snag. I’ll send the coordinates.”
He’d ask about Chicago, but he’s too tired to care. He’d ask eventually, though.
“Oh that? Yeah, we gettin’ hit bad.” He says, still trying to process all that the kid told him. “The news can’t predict anything right these days. Hell, for all I know it’s one of those weather machines.”
He pauses, “Kind of overkill, for the middle of summer…”
—
Another call. Not unusual, but he wishes he could get more sleep in. He sits up with a grunt, snatching the phone off the nightstand.
@DelRoweSmokes ?
Rubbing the sleep from his eyes, he answers. “Delsin?”
@EchoOfEC “Hey, I’m still kicking. Don’t worry about me.”
Zeke pats her shoulder.
“Hey, I… hate to cut this short, but I’m gettin’ a bit tired. Gonna take a quick snooze. Why don’t you stick around, hang out at my desk or the couch. Stay as long as ya need, I won’t be out for too long.”
