Cultural Critic. Christian. Unfortunately, both at the same time. Avid noticer of the God-sized blind spots in American Christianity. Documenting the damage.
I'm sitting here with myself and this weird little toddler of a dog, thinking about how I ended up back in faith after everything faith put me through. Honestly? It's all I can do not to turn around and run.
It's hard to believe in an all-loving God when twenty years of Evangelical guilt still nags at the dark corners of my mind. I don't believe God supports hate, fear, or bigotry. Scripture confirms this, but there's an entire commercial religion complex that banks of guilt and weaponizes oxytocin so effectively that it divorces people from the very love of God it claims to represent.
Do I want to run from the sheer existential terror of being a queer person of faith who has to exist in the same space as people who want to condemn me to an eternal punishment God never prescribed? Sure.
Am I going to? Not on your life.
It's been enjoyable watching you do theological backflips to justify your exclusionary message to make yourself feel special but the truth is that whether you like it or not we are all God's children and you don't get to decide on the condition of anyone's relationship with God because it is inconvenient to your identity politics.
This is all an interesting read but you still skipped over the relationship to the Pauline reference which isn't surprising since this is about the kindness of God and that is counter to your doctrine of fear.
Further the word homosexual wasn't included in the Bible until 1946 when the Greek word arsenokoitai (a word that Paul made up to describe pedastry) was instead changed to homosexuality so that a condemnation on pedophilla became a condemnation on the LGBTQ community which is not shocking given the Christian Nationalist proclivity to idolize heterosexuality and male dominance.
You continue to assert counter to scripture that was provided to you the sins of Sodom which tells me you didn't read them which isn't surprising given that the faster way to trigger an Evangelical is simply to provide them with Scripture.
This was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had pride, excess of food, and prosperous ease but did not aid the poor and needy.
—Ezekiel 16:49
The most loving thing you can do is actually follow the teachings of Jesus rather than try to twist the Bible into a weapon to brow beat anyone you disagree with.
You're using 2 Peter 3:16 to call me one of the "ignorant and unstable" who twist Scripture while skipping what Peter says they twist into.
Read the entire chapter. The scoffers mentioned in 2 Peter 2-3 treat God's patience as proof that judgment never comes. (3:3-4, 3:9) The "twisting" Peter names is the distortion of grace and forbearance into license, which is exactly why the next verse warns against being "carried away with the error of lawless people and los[ing] your own stability" (3:17). The error in view is antinomianism, not taking the kindness of God seriously.
Your application of this verse runs backwards. The clearest Pauline parallel to "regard the patience of our Lord as salvation" (3:15) is from Romans.
Or do you despise the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience? Do you not realize that God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?
—Romans 2:4
Why does this matter? Because Peter directly references Paul in the previous verse, something you left out, whether intentionally or ignorantly, I can't say, but the bottom line is you reach for Scripture about the kindness of God in order to excuse yourself from it. That is the twisting that Peter is warning about.
@MikeWingerii What a fantastic way to disagree with someone while offering nothing empirical to refute what he's said. This isn't anything new it's just an entitled white Christian shaming anyone that doesn't adhere to his perspective to the point of lying and calling it faith.
This is a wholly hilarious assertation given that the modern incarnation of the Conservative Christian Nationalist movement coalesced it's power in Southern California, but I expect this kind of ignorant declaration from a party run by failed Republicans that is ignorant of it's own platform.
@JohnRoseforTN As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian Religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility, of Mussulmen
— The Treaty of Tripoli, Article 11, 1797
1. God literally is nonbinary, transcending gender. No Christian sect denies it, and the Bible speaks of God and refers to God using multiple gender categories.
2. The Bible itself uses at least 6 gender terms within its pages. This isn’t sensational. (No one says there are six sexes)
3. Jesus was culturally a feminist, in the extreme, compared to the patriarchy and misogyny of his day. This isn’t in question.
4. Jesus commanded us to welcome our ethnic neighbors again and again, especially the ones we dislike, disagree with, or whom our neighbors reject. Ever heard of the Samaritans?
5. Christian Nationalism is anti-Christian and an affront to everything Jesus taught about empire and the Kingdom.
Literally NONE of this is sensational.
@iamAtheistGirl Christians are legitimately persecuted in a very few countries but the vast majority of Christians that are the loudest about it are white American Evangelicals who equate being held accountable with being persecuted.
@Creation_Speaks@farmingandJesus Abortion is never mentioned in the Bible. What transcendent moral law you are you referring to? It sounds like you are more interested in dogma than the divine.
@MikeWingerii What I hear you saying is that you are not willing to support a Presbyterian minister in favor of supporting a serial pedophile rapist enabler.
@NathanielH98@DennyBurk So in lieu of your lack of a real position for your having a KKK slogan in your profile you're going to attack my intelligence. Noted.
@NathanielH98@DennyBurk Exactly what I expected from morally bankrupt theologically illiterate nationalist. Just say you have an indefensible position and you're afraid of any opposition to it without having your preprepared talking points fed to you.
