so now yall can delete them drafts & tweets saying i shouldn’t have gone to the met gala & i can’t do both. I CAN DO ALL THINGS THROUGH CHRIST WHO STRENGTHENS ME😇
this is a thread for procrastinators 🧵
procrastination is almost always over something; figure out what it is and write it down.
dedicate a note book entirely for this.
you don’t need to have an answer figured out, you just need to collect the data on yourself.
this will allow you to notice a pattern. don’t overestimate your ability to simply remember bc I promise you remember less than you think.
have it all written down NEATLY into clear points, this note book is a place free of judgement, it is just for you. write it down even if it seems silly. it’s important.
but keep it short.
we’re not trying to turn it into your main journal here. you need to be able to read back and quickly pick up on the reoccurring problems so that they can be engaged with.
collecting data on yourself allows you to not only reflect but build a sort of constellation diagram of your strengths & weaknesses in order to better understand yourself.
as a creative it can help if you have 2 productivity plans that fit your specific context. engage with the material & space you have to work with & most importantly engage with your brain. it is the source of your strength & its imaginative potential is limitless.
so stop waiting.
I say this bc you do not need to wait to have all the right equipments. there is ALWAYS something to be done & if you can honestly say to yourself “there’s nothing I can do until I get that specific paint set, can afford said editing software or piece of tech” etc you are lying to yourself.
learn to be honest. be less of a consumer and more of a creator.
so what does it mean to have two productivity plans in place as a creator who habitually procrastinates, what does this look like?
For me having 2 plans looks like this
You wake up, you self assess & then you decide on either plan 1 or 2
Plan 1 is for you when you are feeling your best, you’re at your most productive & you think you can spend 1 more hour, and then another on your project.
Plan 1 should have at least 1 solid goal in place. I’m a ceramicist so for me an objective for today following plan 1 could be to explore different glazing techniques as glazing is one of the most *technical* & demanding aspect of being a potter.
It requires precision, timing, spatial and material awareness, patience, monitoring of the firing process & then most importantly writing it all down in my potters book so that I can reference it in the future.
Plan 2 is for days when you really don’t feel like doing anything.
You recognise that today is not the type of day when you’ll be on plan 1 but instead of giving up and doing absolutely nothing bc you’re either overwhelmed or have decision fatigue due to your inability to prioritise tasks, you do something anyway.
Plan 2 can look like a day where you just PLAY around, nothing has to be structured, plan 2 does not require you have a list of solid goals in place because that is not what’s important. Plan 2 helps alleviate the stress that comes with being an “unproductive” creative.
What makes plan 2 effective is that it has a positive compounding effect and DISRUPTS procrastination.
If you are habitually not creating both your plan 1 and 2 do not need to end in you having a final “perfect” (sellable) product
What’s more important is that you’re taking action that aligns with your future self and slowly developing discipline while working *with* your brain to minimise the possibility of burnout.
having two plans allows for you to *practice* your craft, investing as much time into the processes involved in your thing as much as possible, even if on some days it feels like you are prioritising the wrong things, you need to collect those wins.
So many creatives I know have problems managing their emotions and are battling perfectionism inside their own heads. They keep themselves busy in the mind but physically they are not doing much in terms of MOVEMENT.
Hope this helps. You’ve got this! 🙏🏼
