La condición de intocable de Vinícius también limita las posibilidades de Mourinho.

Su presencia obliga al Real Madrid a cargar gran parte del ataque sobre la izquierda y empuja a Kylian Mbappé hacia el centro, donde en determinados encuentros encuentra menos espacios.

Liberar a Mourinho de esa obligación permitiría variar el dibujo, construir un frente ofensivo más asociativo o utilizar al propio Vinícius como revulsivo cuando el contexto lo requiera.

Vinícius puede ganar cualquier partido, pero debe entender que su puesto también se conquista cada semana. Si Mourinho quiere que la meritocracia sea creíble, Vinícius tampoco puede ser intocable.

🧵 Into the Mourinho-verse 2.0.

Only four games in: three wins and one loss to Real Betis. It’s not a full-blown crisis, but the job of the coach is to make sure the situation never gets there as history has shown.

So what have we seen from Mourinho so far?

He doesn’t mind conceding possession. IP, artificial transitions are key to his Real Madrid, with quick combinations used to access vertical spaces. More players are also entering the box, making the block much harder for defences to deal with.

But there are clear negatives.

OOP, Real Madrid can go from an extremely explosive attacking structure into a slow defensive shape that becomes disjointed between the attack, midfield and back line.

There is no true anchor, which forces the CBs to act as one at times, stepping higher into duels while the attackers provide little to no support.

Fullbacks become isolated, which then pulls the pivots towards the sides as a consequence.

Because it was so new, Espanyol, La Real and Málaga simply didn’t know what was coming. Real Betis did.

Pellegrini’s solution was simple: don’t press the CBs, allow the pivots to receive, then accelerate. Their inability on the ball triggers Bellingham and Güler to drop, leaving Madrid’s attack with essentially Vinícius and Mbappé. It worked.

And it runs even deeper.

Real Madrid have a poorly balanced squad. There is no real #6 who can anchor the team positionally while simultaneously controlling the tempo.
Mourinho started with Valverde + Bernardo before shifting towards Valverde + Camavinga.
The reasoning makes sense, particularly with Bernardo being the most dribbled-past player in La Liga.
Except Madrid lose too much IP as a process.

Then there is another dynamic: Vinícius + Mbappé.

Mourinho’s formula is clear:
One player stretches the pitch. The other plays inside.
Arda operates as a +1 midfielder while Dumfries provides the width.
But the left side is different.

Vinícius was initially meant to be the LW stretching the pitch. That’s what we saw against Espanyol, with Carreras providing the inside presence. That has changed.

Vinícius’ legs look heavier, and Mourinho has adapted rather than forcing the original structure. He still provides width at times, but he is no longer a classic touchline winger.
Mourinho has pulled him inside more often, giving the fullback the stretching responsibility while Vinícius becomes more of a secondary CF alongside Mbappé.

With those dynamics established, we get into how Madrid actually attack IP.

I tried explaining to this to the Messi-fanatics - that the only way Messi achieved those numbers is by dropping away from the CBs - but their lack of football experience and agenda prevents them from understanding.

There is no voodoo in football; if Messi was averaging the most shots in Europe (besides CR7), and the highest quality shot volume by far - it's because the whole system was built to maximize his finishing - and to do so required him peeling off the CBs and having David Villa/Pedro/Henry/Ibra working slave shifts for him.
