Kristine Ferrer is one of the country’s best tax lawyers. Ask non-biased corporate lawyers, and they’ll tell you about her legendary exploits in the world of corporate finance

1. Her client was Mighty Corporation in its case against the PH government. The owners faced bankruptcy, jail time, and 39 billion pesos fines. She led the legal team for Mighty where she was able to negotiate the fines down to P25 billion, no jail time, and then… sell the company for P45 billion after getting all clearances. Saved the company 13 billion, additional fines, saved the owners from jail, and then brokered a sale that made the company walk away with P45 billion. Instead of the company being seized by the state and the executives sent to prison, the owners walked away entirely free, keeping roughly ₱20 billion in cash. In criminal tax defense, this is considered a textbook masterclass in damage control.

2. She was able to successfully demand a refund from the government for her client before the Court of Appeals for the sum of P152.5 million.
Ask any lawyer how rare and difficult it is to win a tax refund case in the PH. Because BIR strongly resists giving money back once it enters government coffers, the overwhelming majority of judicial tax refund claims are denied or heavily reduced. Successfully reclaiming ₱152.5 million in cash directly from the state solidifies a tax lawyer's elite status.

Unlike Kristine Ferrer, Lorna Kapunan has NO MAJOR track record on handling corporate tax cases.

In her 50 years as lawyer, Kapunan’s biggest most high profile cases were

- defending Janet Lim Napoles but she withdrew 2 months into the case because she didn’t like her fellow lawyer in the case (and not because she felt Janet was guilty and shouldn’t be defended)

- Philippine airlines gender discrimination case

- Atio Castillo hazing case, in which Kapunan was found guilty of unjust vexation after making public statements against UST civil law dean

- James Yap visitation rights

- Hayden kho sex scandal video

AGAIN, no major corporate tax case.

So, if you call Atty Kristine Ferrer as OJT just because she’s decades younger than Lorna Kapunan, unfortunately in the court, you don’t win cases just because you’ve lived longer than your opponent.
