Thank you to every member of the U.S. Congress who voted today for new sanctions against Russia over its criminal, endlessly dirty and insane war of annihilation against Ukraine.
Here in Ukraine, despite everything, we hold on to a good hope for goodness, justice, and reason. And tonight reminds us once again: none of this is in vain. The free world is alive.
They came to save lives. russia attacked them.
Dnipro region, Ukraine.
russian terrorists targeted firefighters responding to a russian strike.
russia attacked the rescuers.
This is a war crime.
The Russian attack on Ukraine’s Security Service Headquarters is a major escalation that demands resolute responses.
Moscow launched this strike during a renewed push for peace — laying bare its true rejection of diplomacy.
Located nearby, the UNESCO World Heritage Site — St. Sophia Cathedral — was also placed at risk.
We call on international partners to unequivocally condemn these actions and step up pressure on the Putin regime.
We also urge UNESCO to react decisively and increase its efforts to protect endangered heritage in Ukraine.
🇺🇦 Zelensky: Together with Mykhailo Drapaty, with General Staff, with Minister of Defense Khmara, we determined the order of our further steps.
First: our positions in the Donetsk region will be strengthened thanks to two renewed groups. The commanders will be Hero of Ukraine Denys Prokopenko and Hero of Ukraine Andriy Biletsky. Today I awarded Andriy with the Golden Star of the Hero.
There was a report by the commander of DShV. General Apostol.
The second important thing for this day: we talked with the commanders here, in the Zaporizhzhia direction. There will be more necessary means. This concerns the ground drones - decisions are needed to have more production and more purchases. There will also be decisions regarding a more systematic approach to middle strikes.
Despite Russia’s full-scale invasion, launched in 2022 with the aim of destroying Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence, Ukraine stands strong and free. Today, Ukraine celebrates 35 years of independence, with the blue and yellow flag still flying proudly over its capital 🇺🇦
Minister of Defence Evgeniy Khmara:
At the President of Ukraine’s proposal, the Verkhovna Rada today approved my candidacy for the position of Minister of Defence. I thank every Ukrainian warrior who is holding the line and destroying Russian occupiers. I am grateful to the President, Members of Parliament, and the people of Ukraine for their trust.
During my address to the Verkhovna Rada, I outlined the priorities for the Ministry of Defence following my appointment.
We are at war with a powerful enemy that employs the most insidious and brutal methods of warfare. We know Russia’s next steps, its mobilisation plans, and its strategy for the autumn and winter.
We will do everything possible to protect Ukraine, reduce Russia’s war-making potential as much as possible, and force the enemy to accept a just peace. This is the task that the Supreme Commander-in-Chief has set for all of us.
That is why synergy at every level is essential: the President, Parliament, Government, General Staff, Ministry of Defence, combat units, defence manufacturers, and partners.
The aggressor can be forced to peace only through the strength of our military, technological solutions, and asymmetric approaches.
We have erased the distances. There are no longer any safe zones for facilities that fuel Russia’s war. For the first time in history, we are striking targets even in Siberia. The entire economic base of the enemy’s war effort is a target for us.
We must gain an advantage on the battlefield through the ingenuity and professionalism of commanders, the training of our warriors, innovation, and modern weapons.
We have three equally important key priorities.
The first priority is the front line. This means seizing the strategic initiative across all domains of warfare: on land, at sea, in the air, and in the information space. The needs of the front must reach the Ministry quickly, and the Ministry’s decisions must reach the front.
The military needs weapons — in large quantities and on time, through transparent procedures and without unnecessary bureaucracy. Procurement will serve exclusively the front and the defence of Ukraine, not any individual interests. We will adapt the supply system to the pace of the war. We are also working with our allies to protect Ukrainian skies from Russian ballistic missiles.
A special focus is on deep strike and middle strike. The operation in Novorossiysk and a series of successful strikes before it have demonstrated the strength of cooperation between the Defence Forces, manufacturers, and state institutions. There will be more Ukrainian-made weapons. The strikes will be more precise.
Another important priority is human capital. The lives and health of our warriors are an absolute value. Technology is needed to give Ukrainian defenders an advantage and minimise the risks to human life. My task is to communicate directly with our defenders.
From my own experience, I know that a warrior is motivated when they feel respected, receive high-quality training, and serve under fair rules.
Another key priority is the defence industry. The defence industrial base is the foundation of our strength today and our security for years to come. Our task is to develop it and scale up production.
During wartime, protecting the state is the key priority for the entire system of government. Every state institution must ask itself what it is doing in the interests of defence.
We share a common struggle and a common responsibility for ending this war on our terms.
Glory to Ukraine!
Few thoughts:
Elections are needed - but timing is key. Beyond security risks, I see high interference risks from the current US administration and Russia. War may last 5 more years, so we need a mechanism for wartime elections. Political crisis is dangerous to a country at war
Our team at Frontelligence Insight was honored to contribute to this Financial Times investigation. A tremendous amount of work went into it by the journalists, much of which naturally stays behind the scenes in the final piece. We highly recommend reading it.
Between the Middle Eastern clusterfuck and the apparent closure of both UA and RU shipping in the Black Sea (with Kazakh oil export being collateral damage), you all should really be buying EVs...
Supporting the front line. Building long-range capabilities to keep pressure on Russia. Scaling tech and asymmetric solutions. Saving soldiers' lives.
Acting Minister of Defence Evgeniy Khmara and new Commander-in-Chief Mykhailo Drapatyi have agreed a shared vision for the Defence Forces.

As Supreme Commander-in-Chief, the President has made an extremely important personnel decision to renew the leadership of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Right now, our top priority is the command and control of our forces and complete focus on the front, because the enemy takes no pauses in this war.
General Oleksandr Syrskyi, my sincere gratitude for your years of the hardest work, for your resilience, and for your dedication to Ukraine. You have done an extraordinary amount for Ukraine's defense. This includes defense of Kyiv, the Kharkiv operation, the most difficult sectors of the front — and ultimately taking command of the Armed Forces at one of the most critical moments of the war.
We worked together on those operations with the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine, which I led, and I witnessed that work firsthand.
I have known Mykhailo Drapatyi for a long time. He is a commander with real battlefield instincts who assesses the situation with a clear head, makes decisions quickly, and protects his people. The army trusts him, and that trust has been earned in combat. Mykhailo Vasylovych, major tasks lie ahead, and you have everything it takes to accomplish them.
The army is strong, and its leadership is in reliable hands. We know what we stand for, and we know where we are headed. Our resilience is the path to victory.
You can count on my full support and assistance. Our strength lies in our unity and in the responsibility of each of us.
I don’t know about you, but I was afraid that none of Ukraine’s outstanding commanders would be willing to shoulder the burden of commanding the entire Armed Forces after Syrskyi.
Fortunately, General Drapatyi stepped forward.
The firing of Gen. Syrskyi and his replacement as commander of the Ukraine armed forces by the widely respected Gen. Mykhailo Drapatyi confirms what I wrote on Monday: that, even though it’s not possible to hold elections in wartime, Ukraine remains a democracy. Zelensky listens to, rather than represses, protesters. This is why Ukraine will win—because of the strength of its civil society. https://t.co/CTF79AudeC
By the way, General Drapatyi is from Kamianets-Podilskyi, and I absolutely recommend the city for a weekend trip.
This historic gem is often overlooked, very unjustly. It is like a miniature Lviv, but without the huge tourist crowds, with equally excellent food and drinks, old streets, a huge river canyon, a spectacular fortress, and very nice prices.
Well, the ability to unite in a dark hour, take matters into our own hands, go out into the streets, and speak out against those in power has more than once saved our people when they stood on the brink of destruction.
Today, the fact that Ukraine remains a democracy despite everything has finally placed its best and most decent battlefield general, Mykhailo Drapatyi, at the head of its armed forces in this terrible war—a man supported almost unanimously by both the people and the army.
This is a great victory, one of the very many hard-won steps toward the light amid the darkness that have already been taken, with many more still ahead.
Today, the entire free world has something to celebrate.
Actually, I can give you a very simple and comprehensive explanation of what lies at the heart of the current major political crisis and the protests against the dismissal of defense minister Fedorov in Ukraine.
The reason is that Fedorov's brief time in office, together with the impressive successes of the Ukrainian Defense Forces in the air and at sea, gave the Ukrainian people one thing above all else: HOPE.
Hope that this horrific war, with its appalling sacrifices and monumental heroism, might end in something far better than, at best, the bitter and humiliating "peace" for heroic Ukraine that would certainly be nothing more than a short respite before an even greater nightmare.
It is the hope that good will ultimately triumph over evil, that life will overcome death and light will overcome the dark, that justice truly exists in this world, and that the great vile evil embodied by fascist Russia will be punished for its crimes.
And who knows how history may yet unfold -- perhaps that hope will one day lead us back home, to Donetsk, Luhansk, Mariupol, Melitopol, Berdyansk, or Crimea, so treacherously stolen from us.
And hope is a tremendous force.
I strongly advise no one to stand in the way of Ukrainians who have finally seen a light at the end of the tunnel of darkness and a source of genuine good hope.
