I think an important piece of context has been lost in the discussion surrounding Ryusei Yokohama's remarks.
The exchange is generally reported as follows:
Fan: "Please appear in a BL drama."
Ryusei Yokohama: "Speaking only for myself, I don't really understand BL, so I don't want to do one."
Fan: "Why not? We live in an age of diversity."
Ryusei Yokohama: "I don't understand this 'diversity' stuff."
Taken literally, that final remark sounds as if he were saying that he doesn't understand the concept of diversity.
However, the Japanese phrase "imi ga wakaranai" ("I don't understand") is not always used literally. Depending on the context, it is a very common expression with a wide range of nuances. It can also mean things like, "I don't understand why you're bringing that up here," or "I don't see how that relates to this situation."
Of course, no one can say with certainty what he intended to mean. However, as a native Japanese speaker reading this exchange within its original linguistic and cultural context, I think it is unlikely that he was rejecting either BL itself or the idea of diversity itself. The opposite interpretation strikes me as more natural.
In other words, he was more likely questioning why the idea of "diversity" was being brought into a discussion about his personal decision not to accept a role because he personally doesn't relate to BL.
So the intended meaning may not have been,
"I don't understand BL or diversity."
but rather,
"I don't understand how my personal decision not to take the role has anything to do with 'diversity.'"
Filming for the Drive x Gaim and Ghost x Drive Taisen movies must have been very interesting. The height difference between Shinnosuke and Kouta/ Takeru! #KamenRider
I binged all the episodes of High Potential up to the latest one in less than two weeks. Now I don't know what to do in the wait for the next ep. I have been obsessively scrolling through the posts and gifsets on Tumblr each day. #HighPotential
This is what it feels like, for me, being on Toku Twitter recently. Just post on post from people who weren't born/ barely existed when I did my GCSEs/ A-Levels. When I see Nox (Kamen Rider Zeztz- whose actor is younger than I am) described as old, it just wounds me.
being over 35 in fandom spaces is wild because every day, it’s just a round robin of random people calling 40 year olds hags. and when you click the accounts to see who’s saying it, expecting it to be 14 year olds, the ops are legit 28.
