Two brothers were home. Their parents, Francois and Santa Steenkamp, were at the Loskop Dam with the fishing community. ADT phoned the father at 22:45.

He called Fransie.
No answer.

He got Dirkie.

“Dad, Fransie is dead.”

That is the phone call. That is the country.

The attackers did not even smash the gate like men. They switched off the gate motor lever, pushed it open, and walked into a family’s house in eMalahleni. For a television. Supposedly.

Fransie Steenkamp was shot in the stomach and the head, and died on the scene. A Karp Bonanza post circulating in the angling community says the older son, named there as Francois, tried to shield his younger brother and was shot seven times before he dropped. Either way, a son is dead on the floor of his own home.

Dirkie Steenkamp, in the first reports, was shot four times. He was rushed to Life Cosmos ICU, went for emergency surgery after a stomach wound, and is fighting. The last thing he had to tell his father was that his brother was already gone.

Then came the sentence that should be burned onto every ANC press release about “ordinary crime.”

“My child was killed for a television."

A TV. Not a farm payroll. Not a safe full of cash. A box that plays pictures. Two sons. One living room. A father standing at a dam while his boy is turned into a corpse.

The Highveld fishing crowd is gutted. Francois of Fuchs Oils. Seventeen years a Karp Bonanza sponsor. Same community that already buried John Wickham from Dullstroom. Now it is the Steenkamp boys in Paarlstraat.

No suspect names. No “we have them.” Just police tape on a brick wall and another White family blown in half while Pretoria pretends this is weather.

RIP Fransie.
