I’ve been thinking of what it means to be a “citizen” (warganegara) and “subject” (rakyat) for quite sometime. It took me about two years to finish writing this article. Quite longer than expected because I was concurrently working on my PhD dissertation, and I was hard on—

I thank everyone who supported me throughout this journey, especially my parents for ensuring that I never had to worry about money during my studies, which I recognize is a privilege in itself. I’m glad it paid off in the end, Alhamdullilah.
