Congratulations to 🇮🇳 @chessvaishali — who started as the lowest-rated player — for winning the Women's #FIDECandidates and earning a World Championship match against 🇨🇳 Ju Wenjun!
Huge congratulations to India's latest Grandmaster, and the first chess player to become a Grandmaster from North-east India - Mayank Chakraborty! Mayank becomes the country's 94th GM.
Mayank completed his 3rd and final GM Norm at the Hotel Stockholm North by First Hotels Young talents! After 8 rounds of play, Mayank is leading the tournament by a full point - he is on 6.5/8 points. After defeating IM Philip Lindgren in the 8th round today, Mayank has made his final GM norm with a round to spare!
Hailing from Guwahati, Assam, Mayank was the highest-rated player from the entire north-east India for a while now - and now he has become the first Grandmaster from that region! Huge congratulations to Mayank, his team and his family for this amazing achievement.
Important note: Mayank's final round opponent, IM Willow Jonah B needs to turn up to the board tomorrow for Mayank's final GM norm to be valid! Once Mayank's opponent makes the first move at 1:30 PM IST tomorrow, he officially becomes the latest Chess Grandmaster of India.

ZERO RHINOS POACHED IN 2025
You heard it right, ZERO rhinos have been poached in Assam in 2025, continuing our excellent conservation efforts and maintaining our streak of protecting Assam's pride.
Gratitude 🙏 ❤️🙏
Thankyou to my family, team and sponsor.
Thankyou to fellow chess players, organisers, volunteers and everyone else behind the scene making it happen.
Finally thankyou to everyone who has supported me throughout the year. It is always heartening to read the messages, they mean alot 🙏
A disappointing end for @ArjunErigaisi at the World Rapid & Blitz 2025. But still a remarkable achievement overall, two Bronze medals💪
He ends 2025 ranked as India's number one in Classical, Rapid, and Blitz.
He is World No. 5 in Classical and Blitz, and World No. 3 in Rapid.
While there have been a few tough losses and near-misses in key moments, it’s also worth noting that he hasn’t had as many opportunities to face the absolute elite - the 2750+ group as much as he deserves. That exposure plays a crucial role in a player’s development at this level.
These are fine margins, and at the very top, those small differences often become the decisive factor.
I truly hope Arjun gets more games against the very best in the world, especially in classical chess.
