There is no reconciling the national mythologies of Canada and the United States. They cancel each other out completely.

You will see right wing American nationalists accuse right wing Canadian nationalists of having TDS, being obsessed with the United States, or in some manner hating their country. They will default to defending the worst auspices of liberal democracy, because their republic is founded on revolutionary liberalism.

Any Canadian assertion of nationhood gets treated by Americans as petty, insecure, or anti American. Simply knowing that we belong to a different ethnos, history, and tradition is taken as an insult. The American response is always the same: Why would you not want to be American? Do you think there is something wrong with being American?

Americans assume their hegemony over North America, and often the entire Western Hemisphere, is natural and justified. That assumption directly threatens Canadian self determination, national survival, and posterity.

The existence of Canada is a direct repudiation of American national mythology. That it exists means a whole lot of people good, productive, and contributing people weren’t exactly happy with the Patriots did things.

The United States was a breakaway state of the British Empire. Canada was built by people who rejected the liberal American republic, and also the French Revolution so completely they fought against it, abandoned their homes, and started over in harsh and inhospitable lands rather than submit to it.

We as the descendants of Loyalists, among the first people to fight the revolutionary liberalism unleashed by the American and French Revolutions. They fought to restore order, crush self interested merchant oligarchs, and defeat the religious fanatics who stirred up revolution for their own benefit. Chief among them were the Puritans of Massachusetts, who preached heresy against the Anglican Church from their pulpits, exactly as Bishop John Strachan of Toronto wrote. They created a country based on order, continuity, loyalty, and inherited tradition.

This conflict existed even when both countries were God fearing, traditionalist, right wing, and nationalist. Canada and the United States share some blood, language, and a broader civilizational inheritance, but like the rest of the Anglosphere they remain separate peoples with different histories, loyalties, institutions, and national destinies. The United States was born by rebelling against the British and European worlds. Canada was born by rejecting the liberal revolutionary American rebellion.
