Last week science students from St. Catherine's Academy in Mount Carmel hauled up 98 invasive European Green Crabs, including 35 females and 63 males. Special thanks to students, teachers, support staff, and our bus driver! Already excited to come back next season! @FishOceansCAN
Some of our volunteers that helped us with our last green crab trip of the season!
For this season we removed a total of 2438 green crab! 2148 male and 300 female, with lots of native rock crab placed back into their habitat!

As part of our Hidden Rivers initiative, we took a look at Kelly's Brook in St. John's. Here we share the story behind its development and subsequent conservation actions, and discuss the impact of culverting urban waterways.

Groundwater is invisible, but its impact is visible everywhere. Did you know that almost 30% of Newfoundland and Labrador’s population is served by groundwater systems? Happy #WorldWaterDay!
Wetlands are 🌎 life providers:

Today is #WorldWetlandsDay2022 where we recognize the importance of wetlands in providing habitat, storing carbon, and reducing flood risks. Take a look at the work being done here in our Province!

Over the past summer, we have visited more than 100 culverts around Placentia Bay and assessed more than 40 that are fish-bearing in order to help prioritize aquatic connectivity restoration efforts.
Our goal is to identify potential problem culverts causing difficulty for the fish that need to migrate up and down the waterway, so that they can be repaired or replaced in the near future.
Check out what we found! From high outflow drops, low water levels, and barriers, to collapsing and eroded bottoms, several culverts are in poor condition or have failed.

All of these could end up in our ocean and they can be harmful to marine animals and their habitat. Since installing LittaTraps(TM), we have been able to reduce the amount of litter, debris, and plastics being transported by stormwater runoff into our ocean!
