No one mixes with those they intend to exterminate. No one founds families, towns, and generations with people they consider inferior. The very fact that Hispanic America is today predominantly mestizo dismantles one of the great myths of modern history: the idea that the Spanish presence in the New World was a project of racial destruction.

Unlike other European empires, Spain did not conceive of America as a mere colony of exploitation, but as an extension of its own kingdoms. That is why cities, universities, churches, and town councils were founded. The aim was not simply to extract wealth, but to live, to settle, and to create stable societies with laws, families, and historical continuity.

The first Spaniards who arrived were, for the most part, men. But Spain never prohibited marriage between Spaniards and indigenous people. On the contrary, indigenous peoples were recognized as free vassals of the king, and the Church affirmed their full humanity. This made legitimate marriages, mixed families, and shared inheritances possible. The mestizo thus emerged as a normal part of society.

Spaniards did not consider themselves superior because of their ethnic origin, but because they belonged to a Christian civilization. And that civilization, by its very nature, sought to integrate rather than exclude. Converting the other and making him part of the community was both a religious duty and a policy of the Crown. From baptism onward, the indigenous person acquired the same dignity as any Christian.

Within a few generations, mestizaje became the heart of Hispanic America. The Spanish language, Roman law, Christian faith, and indigenous heritage fused to create a new civilization. Mexico, Peru, or Colombia are not remnants of opposing worlds, but the fruit of a historical union.

Hispanic America exists because Spain did not separate races; it united them. And from that union was born one of the world’s great civilizations.
