I think Justin Phillip Reed’s second collection, THE MALEVOLENT VOLUME, is such a masterful book, as is his debut, INDECENCY.

I can’t stop thinking about what Toni Morrison said of James Baldwin: “You went into that forbidden territory and decolonized it..and un-gated it for black people so that in your wake we could enter it, occupy it, restructure it.”
Poetry is an art form used by many BIPOC folx to catalyze and drive social justice movements at the local and national levels.
A short list: Gloria Anzaldúa, Robert Hayden, Maya Angelou, Martín Espada, Gwendolyn Brooks, Aimee Nezhukumatathil, Audre Lorde, Amiri Baraka…
& I know we already know this, too, but the fact these universities have a CLEAR conscience about not providing adjuncts with health insurance DURING A PANDEMIC, is a FUCKING JOKE
1. The Creative Writing MFA has been in the US for less than 100 years.
2. Most of your OG BIPOC faves never got an MFA.
3. Most MFAs churn out teachers as opposed to pro writers—so it’s only super beneficial if you want to teach.
Senator Hanson keeps lying about the virus and vaccines. Facebook banned MP Craig Kelly for spreading lies. MP Christensen is anti-vax and spreads lies. Youtube had to ban Sky News for a week for broadcasting lies. But sure, the problem is random brown people in Western Sydney.
@FaylitaHicks@ProFellow this whole thread is sooooo fire & supportive, thank you for this so bomb!! a couple years ago, I think, the brilliant & generous @aireadee shared this folder of resources for poets who weren’t in an MFA: https://t.co/LA5eQ36ey1
4. W/ the internet and social media—you can easily get well-rounded reading lists, workshop experiences, info abt pro writing tools, and a pseudo mentorship via threads, articles, and open-market opportunities.
It’s dope if you get one—but you don’t need an MFA to thrive. ✌🏾
Son. I’ve never seen anything like this.
This is kind of what #Verzuz is supposed to be. Like not just replaying moments, but the artists coming out of this revitalized. Enhanced.
