Lahirnya Anak Krakatau. The origin story. 🌋

Agustus 1883, Gunung Krakatau meledak begitu dahsyat sampai dua pertiga tubuhnya hilang. Danan dan Perbuwatan musnah, sementara Rakata tinggal separuh. Yang tersisa hanya kaldera dalam di tengah Selat Sunda, terisi air laut. Lalu semuanya sunyi. Selama 44 tahun, tidak ada yang tahu bahwa di bawah permukaan laut, sesuatu sedang menunggu.

Sampai 29 Desember 1927. Nelayan di Selat Sunda melihat sesuatu yang aneh: asap naik dari tengah laut. Malamnya, batu pijar terlihat menyembur dari bawah permukaan. Aktivitas vulkanik baru muncul tepat di antara bekas puncak Danan dan Perbuwatan. Bukan sekadar sisa gunung lama, sesuatu yang baru sedang lahir.

Tahun-tahun berikutnya seperti permainan muncul dan tenggelam. Pulau kecil terbentuk, lalu dihancurkan ombak dalam hitungan hari atau minggu. Muncul lagi, tenggelam lagi. Berkali-kali. Sampai pada 20 Januari 1929, ahli gunung api Stehn melihat tumpukan material yang mulai bertahan di atas permukaan laut. Embrio sebuah pulau baru.

Lalu, 11 Agustus 1930, untuk pertama kalinya daratan itu tidak lagi tenggelam. Sebuah pulau vulkanik baru berdiri permanen di tengah kaldera ayahnya. Orang-orang kemudian memberinya nama Anak Krakatau.

Anak yang lahir dari kehancuran, dan terus tumbuh dari laut hingga menjadi gunung api yang kita kenal sekarang.
