Once upon a time there was a fintech app in a certain developing country that had given away free money in order to get people to sign up. Not incentives based on actions the users took with their own money (which may have had somewhat different outcomes 🤷‍♀️). Just free money. From jump. Rumour has it that 90% of the users drew off the money and never opened the app again. Luckily for that fintech the money that was being given away wasn't their money. They were just the distribution interface. It was actually gov't money.

I'm seeing the same playbook being used again by a different company, with the same kind of app, in the same country. This time with MORE money per person and presumably with the fintech's own funds this time. This is an interesting approach. Still, to each his own, it may work for them.
