I draw much inspiration from how tree fungi grow their shapes into and around the tree. Their agency is the growing, the making, of their own body into the world. I like the idea of making as agency-growing.

Often I allow the paint to be too runny, deliberately, to work on the border of manageability. This gives me a chance to listen to the material and enter a conversation with it, stepping away from merely telling.
