Japan moves to end Tokyo Drift culture as new law targets dangerous drifting

A new legal revision in Japan will officially classify drifting as "dangerous driving" and make it a punishable criminal offense.

The Ministry of Justice proposed the change after courts repeatedly ruled that drifting wasn't technically illegal because the law didn't explicitly mention it.

The turning point was a 2013 Kyoto crash where an 18-year-old's drift maneuver injured five elementary school kids, yet courts said his speed wasn't "high enough" to count as dangerous driving, reports Japan Inside.
