But if we got news that most of the SPR was set on fire, and there was only 2-3 weeks worth of releases left. The market would realize next month and the following were going to be short supply. The current price will get front-run ahead of that knowing there is no more buffer.

You’re using “oil prices” as one encompassing term. There are different contract months and short term vs long term prices.

A release adds supply short term. SPR releases end up in commercial stocks.

Long term, those barrels need to be refilled (at around 20% for this release). That will be supply taken off the market in probably 1-2 years.

The inventory LEVEL of the SPR is different from the release itself. The release will add supply onto, let’s say front month WTI.
