I used to think number theory was boring. I thought it was all about numbers and weird calculational tricks — whereas I preferred topics that were conceptual.

That changed when I took a course about elliptic curves a few summers ago. There I learned a theorem called the Hasse-Weil bound which, to this day, still gives me pause.
