Prof. Haruna Musa Wins Resounding Community Acceptability in BUK Vice-Chancellor Selection Process

Professor Haruna Musa, the current Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics) and a Professor of Polymer Chemistry, has emerged as the most widely supported candidate in the Vice-Chancellor selection process at Bayero University, Kano, following the 7th Congregation Parley held on Tuesday, 1st July 2025.

In a closely monitored and transparent election process, Prof. Musa secured a total of 853 votes, significantly outpacing four other eminent contenders. His victory reflects a strong vote of confidence from the University’s academic and senior administrative community.

Other candidates in the race included Professor Mahmoud Umar Sani(former Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Management Services) who polled 367 votes, Professor Sani Muhammad Gumel (former Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics) with 364 votes, Professor Adamu Idris Tanko (former DVC Academics and Administration) who received 161 votes, and Professor Bashir Muhd Fagge, who got 18 votes.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, who presided over the congregation parley, emphasized that the exercise was part of the broader Vice-Chancellor appointment process, with community acceptability contributing 20% in the final selection criteria. He commended all the candidates for their commitment to the University’s progress and noted that the outcome was a collective victory.
“This process reflects the strength of our democratic and transparent institutional culture,” Prof. Abbas remarked. “I encourage all contestants to continue to support the University and rally around whoever is ultimately appointed by the Governing Council.”
Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Professor Muhtari Ali Hajara, announced the results, disclosing that 1,784 staff members were accredited to vote. Of these, 17 votes were invalid, while four remained unaccounted for. Prof. Musa was formally declared the candidate with the highest number of valid votes.
In a demonstration of unity and maturity, Professor Sani Muhammad Gumel, one of the candidates, expressed satisfaction with the process and pledged his full support to Prof. Musa. “The election was fair, transparent, and credible. The result clearly indicates the direction of the University community,” he stated.
Professor Rukayyatu Ahmed Rufa’i, former Minister of Education, and Professor Abdalla Uba Adamu, former Vice-Chancellor of National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) congratulated the Vice-Chancellor for steering BUK through five transformative years. They praised the transparent and inclusive process and urged continued cooperation among the University’s academic leadership.
