Blunt truth:
FCRA exists to stop foreign money from buying influence in India — political, social, and especially religious. The biggest, most consistent target has always been the massive pipeline of Western (mostly American and European) Christian missionary funding that has poured into the country for decades to drive conversions.
That’s not conspiracy talk. Large evangelical networks treat India as a major mission field. They fund schools, hospitals, orphanages, and “community development” projects that frequently come with soft or hard pressure to convert, especially among tribals, Dalits, and the poor. The money is real, the numbers are large, and the intent is often explicit in the donor literature back home: “reach the unreached,” “harvest souls,” etc.
Indian governments of various stripes have long seen this as demographic and cultural interference. Under the current one it is enforced more aggressively. When FCRA licenses get cancelled or not renewed, a lot of the affected organisations are Christian ones because they are among the biggest recipients of foreign funds. Secular left NGOs get hit too (Greenpeace, Amnesty-style groups), but the religious conversion angle is a core reason the law keeps getting tightened.
Riley Moore’s claim that the latest amendments are a “war on Christians” or a plot to seize churches is overblown advocacy. The bill is about assets created with foreign money when the registration ends. It applies to every NGO. Places of worship themselves are not being nationalised. What is being restricted is the ability of foreign donors to keep bankrolling operations after the Indian state decides the organisation no longer qualifies.
From the Indian nationalist perspective this is simple sovereignty: no foreign power or religious network gets an open cheque to reshape the population. From the missionary and Western Christian-right perspective any restriction on their funding and operations is persecution. Both sides are defending their interests. The money and the conversion agenda are real; the “genocide” or pure anti-Christian pogrom framing is not.
